Last minute Oktoberfest trip - help!
Discussion
It crept up on me and I didn't notice.
And so, my attempts at arranging a trip to Oktoberfest for the weekend of 28th September are proving to return rather expensive results.
If anyone has any suggestions of how to (economically) head out on Friday and return on the Sunday I'd be all ears.
My current thinking is to fly to somewhere circa 3 hours away, and pick up a hire car. Don't mind spending the Friday night not in Munich, and then head in on the Saturday morning - try to catch a Bayern Munich game, then on to the city centre for some beers. Would need somewhere to crash that night, and then drive back, drop off the hire car and fly home on the Sunday.
Any bright ideas chaps?

I'm trying to organise catching up with some mates out there.
Looks like a cab from Munich airport to the centre is about 50 euros. Or is the train cheaper and better?
Cheers
S8 takes about 35 mins to Marianplatz and costs 10€ Looks like a cab from Munich airport to the centre is about 50 euros. Or is the train cheaper and better?

Lufthansa airport bus takes around the same time and costs the same price. S8 (s bahn) is a bit easier to find if you have not been there before
They don't have one themselves. I think they're turning up early at 9am to get somewhere to sit when they go.
The day I arrive they'll be in town, or at the apartment anyway. So that is covered.
Going home I need to be at Munich airport for 5:45 as my flight will be at 7:45.
It seems the trains start about 4am. So I should be good to go.
Are the stop over flight worth the saving, or is Lufthansa direct worth the extra £180-£200 for the direct flights?

Just found out that my neighbours' boyfriend has been and said it is good as long as you can ignore those who take it too far, but without a ticket to a tent you have no chance?
Did you have any luck with flights?
I'm thinking of hanging on until the day before and see if I get lucky with unfilled flights. I can't justify £400 on flights for three nights. Plus then whatever I spend on top of that.

Been over the last 2 years. Not going this year sadly.
Going from the airport I've used taxis and trains. Usually we have 4 of us on the same flight so a taxi works out quite reasonable.
Regarding tents - I never have tickets. Get there early - before 9/10am and you shouldn't have a problem finding a table. Conversely this means you'll usually be somewhat inebriated by 4/5pm though. I like Schottenhamel (pretty sure this is a Spaten tent) and the Paulaner tents.
Watch out for the security guards. They don't take any crap from people - I've seen them hit people with batons etc which looked a nasty way to go.
If you go on rides, don't go on the helter skelter. There's a travelator that takes you to the top. This runs at 7mph or so. You WILL fall off after a few beers and it does hurt. A lot!
Try to take it easy on the beer. It's usually strong-ish stuff and it's a long day if you start at 9/10am! Eat plenty of chicken, pork and stodgy food to keep going. Also be friendly and let people sit on your table. I've had some brilliant days with random people at Oktoberfest. Seriously gutted I'm not going this year.

Sounds good fun. They're only going for three nights. I'm thinking that if I plan it better for next year I can go for longer. See more of Germany. Have a bed to sleep on rather then the floor etc. If I get cheap flights this weekend for Monday then I will go, but that money for a rush visit and no comfort doesn't appeal as much when other friends want to go next year so I can organise it rather then tag along.
Havent done Oktoberfest but specific to Munich itself:
1) Taxi to/from airport is 50EU, and if you want to nudge 200kph in a shagged out E class is not to be missed!
2) Lufthansa bus frequent, good value but limited to speed limit
3) When offered something tasty in a litre pot check its not 8.5% before rapidly woofing another 5
4) Bavarian rail network is superb if youre travelling from outside - check budget airline destinations are connected though
