What to do in Naples
Discussion
Mrs. Speedyman and myself are off to Naples at the end of this month, we only have Pompeii on our list of places to go so far. From internet searches there is lots to do, but only having a week we can't do them all. So any suggestions on other must see places of interest you have from personal experiences.

Came back from Sorrento 28th Sept
Try:
Sorrento (really nice place IMHO)
Capri
Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello, Amalfi - all stunning and you can use the bus to travel there and boat to come back so you get the best of both views!)
When in Sorrento get to the Excelsior Vittoria (front line, right above the main Capri ferry port and near Piazza Tasso, the main square) and have a bottle of decent Prosecco for 30 Euro - great service, great surroundings!
On the main street along from the Piazza Tasso there is a great Gelataria that it would appear the likes of Schumacher have eaten in (they also have photos of a life size model of a Ferrari F1, created in chocolate).
If your Mrs is the romatic kind, I've seen more weddings in Sorrento in a week (Italian and English weddings) than I've seen in my life - normally around St Francesco Cloisters, also just off the front row

Naples itself? No way, it's st, it's dangerous, stay outside of Naples in Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano etc, etc...Speedyman

Herculaneum is smaller, but better preserved than Pompeii.
Definitely this. Herculaneum beats Pompeii, although it has no brothel, which is the highlight of Pompeii.Ignore the scare stories of Naples. It's a great city, quite scruffy but with a great vibe. Like any big city, don't walk thru the rougher parts at night.
If Napoli are playing at home, go, if you like football. Passionate fans makes for a great experience.
Do they still have huge rubbish collection issues because of the Mafia? i knew a few Italians who were pretty much ashamed of Naples, never a good sign when the Mafia is running vital services
never been but as others have said Sorrento, know people who have been and although touristy supposed to be nice

Naples is almost a third world city. It's a hole.
Pompeii and Herculaneum are worth a visit - take the train though. It's cheaper and you avoid the pushy tourist guided.
Sorrento is nice, and there is always the ferry if you want to see the coast.
Found a few good places to eat, and dome nice leather bags in Sorrento.

I found even Sorrento the, how you say, Salou of Italy? Too tourist-ish for our liking, but still lovely to look at. Road to Amalfi and everything on route beautiful. Naples is great for Pizza and new town is fine. Old town is genuinely scary, and I've travelled quite a few scary places, thought we would be car jacked at any second!
Generally tend to agree with previous comments: don't stay in Naples, but do visit. Expect to get ripped off, but you should do the old town, in particular Capella San Severo (fantastic sculptures) and several "The Original Pizza" Places, all good in fact. We stayed in Sorrento, which is very touristy, but has many decent hotels at decent prices, and the Circumvesuviana - a train into Naples which also stops at Pompeii and Herculaneum on the way. Enjoy yourselves, it's a beautiful area, but just be careful in Naples, it can be dodgy!

Naples? AVOID!!!
I have stayed in Naples, with my wife, several times ,most recently this September.I have always enjoyed the hustle and bustle of an interesting city with a lot to offer.
Culture,architecture,markets,it has the lot.
Never had a problem but as usual in what is an arguably 'edgy' city do not represent yourself as a target so no bling and be aware of your environment.
Take the ferry to Ischia for a nice change of scene.
