Christmas markets
Discussion
I've just worked out that I can pretty much go to Europe with the Mrs and little man (2 years old) for free. Happy days
So we would like to go to a Christmas market to get into the swing of things in early December. Vienna is the one that springs to mind, but does anybody have any suggestions as to which towns are nice and Christmassy at that time of year?

Innsbruck - smaller but feels more "friendly town" than "big city" - also lots to do very locally - new funicular link from the city centre to the cable car that takes you up the mountains behind the city also Stubai Glacier not far away etc
How about Munich - BMW World not far away from there either.... :-)

My wife worked at BMW in Munich for a year so we spent a lot of time cruising the various christkindlmarkt all around Bavaria and into Austria.
My personal preference was always the big one in Munich. So much to see and do, amazing food and music, very family friendly etc. You can also take the Mrs shopping for swank baubles on Leopoldstrasse and the city itself is great. Good transport links too and not too far to fly with a little dude.

Are you local to Innsbruck at all? I've been living here since July, working very close. This christmas market kicked off last friday very cosy. Its far too easy to get off the train and go for a few Glüweins and a bratwurst! How about Munich - BMW World not far away from there either.... :-)
I only managed one terrible instagram photo on friday, but I shall get more. Also we have 5 christmas markets in total. There is one up at 800m at the funicular mid-stop station. Just the two open at the moment
Hi,
No - we live in Sussex!! Just love the area - we got married in Austria and had our honeymoon in the Stubai valley. We have friends that live in Mutters and Fulpmes so try n go back every few years. Mainly in the summer but am looking forward to taking the kids skiing in the winter when they get a bit older. Looking at the glacier web cam looks like there is plenty of snow already. Its a lovely area with lots to do.... Enjoy being out there - dead jealous!!

Mrs DS and I did a couple of unexpected Xmas markets this weekend.
We caught the first day of the markets in Amiens (FR) (we were there visiting friends). They don't really "get it" and the jolly drinking wine thing was simply not the same and, unbelievably - no sausage!!! Hot cider and calvados and roast chestnuts were ok though. Interesting experience but not one I'd travel to see (even if I lived there). Such things are better left to the more northern europeans, I feel.
Yesterday we went to Bruges for the day (ferry to Hull in the evening) and Bruges Xmas market was lovely. Proper stalls selling proper stuff, lots of gluhwien stalls and sausage! Of course there are all the beautiful buildings of Bruges around and if it gets a bit nippy there is no shortage of nice bars to dive into. There's even an ice rink in the main square. This was all good stuff, and we are going to do a dedicated trip to this one next year.
