I'm heading over with the OH in January. Was thinking a river cruise for dinner, and a show at Crazy Horse. Are these places worth booking in advance online, or will we get a better price 'on the door'?

Couple of things I don't think have been mentioned.

Arc De Triomphe - Great views over the city without the horrendous queues for the Eiffel Tour.

The Musée de l'Orangerie - Contains some massive Water Lilly paintings by Monet lit by a translucent roof. Really great way to display these paintings (along with some smaller works by other artists).

I agree! went to both at the start of October- a great day out!

Another thing to do is get some Macarons from LaDuree on the Champs Elysees

On the roof of Printemps (department store) there is a cafe/bar. Nice place to watch the sunset at the end of the day with superp views of Tour Montparnasse, Eiffel and Sacre Couer.
There is another cool cafe on the roof of La Samaritaine by the river.

Both are overpriced crap aimed at tourists.

And a baguette. Just a simple baguette. Eat it on its own, tearing off a chunk as you amble around the streets. Fabulous.

PS: rue Mouffetard for restaurants.

Make sure you go to a proper baker though, one that says "Artisan Boulanger".

True. Banette is my favourite.

Just giving the thread a bit of a bump as we're going for a few days on Saturday. I've never been as a tourist, only ever with work.

What's the situation currently like regarding security? Ordinarily I'd assume it's like any major city in the world, where you need to take reasonable precautions, but nothing that gets in the way of your trip.

However, today I've read a number of stories (and I accept they might well be isolated incidents) of people getting scammed for money at the entrance to some of the attractions, and getting attacked if they refuse. Is it as bad as the internet worriers might suggest, or is it simply a few minor incidents being blown up out of all proportion.

For reference, I've wandered around big cities in many countries, including Cape Town, Beijing, San Fran, NY, etc, and never really came across any issues other than getting harassed in Beijing and HK, but ignoring the street hawkers there worked well.

We inadvertently stumbled across the Ménagerie du Jardin des plantes, the second oldest zoo in the world which was a highlight for us with its ancient feel and exotic species...

Large groups dancing on the riverside in the evening is charming to watch or partake in.

Best tip: use the river ferries to skip effortlessly between the major sights and avoid the congested roads.

Fouquetts on the Champs Elysee.

Steak and chips comes with an entire BOWL full of Bearnaise sauce. Lovely.

Quite famous place. Fans of the Ian Flemming Bond novels will know all about it.
Really?

Probably the worst restaurant I've ever been to if you factor in value for money.
