Hello folks,

Looking for a suggestion on the best place to find a mustang/muscle car to hire for a road trip from LA to Miami next year.

Also any suggestions for things to do, or indeed to share your experiences of a similar trip will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Matt..

V6 or V8?
You can probably get a V6 from most rental companies without many issues, though do be aware most rental companies use the 'or similar' thing. Hertz rent specific models though.

I do a Trip from Washington, DC to LA earlier this year, which was 6,500 miles. Maybe you can get some ideas? Though i imagine you'll be going a more southerly route? What are your interests? For me, it's all about photography, and that takes me to many national parks.

Entirely possible with Hertz. What dates/length of time are you looking at? Three weeks with a Ford Mustang GT Premium comes in at $5,200, a Kia Rio is $1,500! Sadly it looks like the Hertz Penske GT is pick up and drop off the same location only.

Some great responses here, cheers guys. Looks like I may have to dash that idea then, go for something like their huge SUVs!

We booked a huge SUV but arrived at Hertz San Francisco on a sunny day and for the same money took a convertible, poor V6 but great for touring.

We booked a V6 Mustang Convertible for 13 days. Picked it up at San Francisco airport and dropped it off at Phoenix Arizona airport.

Felt sure there wouldn't be one available when we arrived and that we'd get the "Sorry Sir, there are none available. How would you like this ..... instead?" But, no. We were offered a choice of colours (sorry, colors!) and chose red.

They completed all the paperwork at the desk and then we went down to the underground car park to collect the keys and find the car. It was metallic red (not the Ferrari red I was hoping for) with a tan hood and interior and it looked really tired. However, it was parked next to a gleaming white, factory-fresh one so we asked if we could change our minds and have that instead.

Imagine the reaction that would get in the UK - lots of sighing and rolling of the eyes or even a flat-refusal, but not there. "No problem Sir. Just let me change all the paperwork and then you can get underway. I won't keep you guys a minute". Delightful.

The trip was a huge success and the car played a major part in that. Cost was £796 plus fuel.

I used Alamo through Virgin (great great discount at mates rates. FIND A MATE WHO WORKS AT VIRGIN!) at Phoenix in September. Funnily enough, it was a white drop top like the poster above me scratchchin

We booked a Mustang for the drive from San Francisco to LA through Hertz. We were able to reserve the exact model so we wouldn't be fobbed off with a Chrysler Sebring or similar. When we turned up, we were offered a V8 Camaro SS with 400 miles on the clock for virtually no extra charge!

I took a gamble with the "or similar" thing and booked with Budget for my last US trip. Ended up with a practically brand new full-spec black convertible mustang (V6), I was over the moon. They even had a V8 Camaro for an extra $40 a day but it was hard top so I stuck with the less powerful mustang.

I travelled with 3 couples, 2 of us got a mustang, 1 got a crappy Chrysler sebring so it is a gamble.

If you want guaranteed, you may want to look in to Avis preferred - I hear you can choose the exact car you want:
