The missus and i are buying each other a weekend away for xmas.

Did this last year and stayed at the Carlyon Bay Hotel in Cornwall, which was very nice.

Any suggestions for nice hotels in the South Devon/Cornwall/Dorset/Somerset area where we will get a good deal in February? Many seem to have special offers on around that time as it is quiet (Carlyon upgraded us from a standard sea-view room to a deluxe suite as it was quiet, which was lovely!)

Budget is £300-£400 for the weekend including dinners.

Wife and I stayed here in South Somerset earlier this year for three nights:

http://www.ashhousecountryhotel.co.uk

We had the Alderman Room: excellent. So good, we asked about the bed linen and were told it had recently been renewed throughout all bedrooms, and they gave us the details so we have it at home now!

We used their restaurant one evening, which was good.

A place nearby for a really good meal is here:

They have accommodation too.

If you're into National Trust properties there's about five to visit nearby.

In Cornwall we've often fancied a stay in The Nare Hotel on the Roseland Peninsula. The details are here:

It has a good reputation.

Chewton Glenn in the New Forest. Its my favourite UK hotel. Service is impeccable, tips not required, if you try and tip a porter they refuse it, at least they have each time I stayed there.

They look a good shout. Like the sound of the Lord Poulette's menu.

It's because you look like you can't afford it.

For something a bit different try Burgh Island Hotel. It's cut off by the tide much of the time, so access is either by Land Rover or sea tractor (a motorised platform on stilts).

It's art deco and a bit eccentric. When we were there a few years back reception was pretty much how it would have been in the 1930s. We stayed at the Artists Studio which is a flat above the Pilchard Inn, separated from the hotel by a 50m walk.

The food was very good and the atmosphere straight out of Poirot. Service was pretty good but not exceptional. But being cut off by the tide in that environment is quite evocative.

Why the bad feedback on these two places? I haven't been to Bovey Castle, but I was planning to go in future when my two young children are a bit older.

Metropole was very old and in poor condition, noisy squeaky floorboards and only £10 cheaper than we paid to stay the St Enodoc hotel across the Estuary.
Bovey Castle was c£350 - £400 for the night, the restaurant was dire with uncleared tables and very slow service.
I am all for a weekend break in the South West, I was born in Cornwall and love the place but you can do better than these two places. I would have recommended the St Enodoc but I believe it closes (or at least Nathan Outlaws restaurant does) for the winter.

+1 bedruthan steps is nice
sister hotel to teh scarlet IIRC

Saunton sands is another, a bit oldy worldy but fabulous location. Lee/Woolacoombe etc. is a great spot as well, quite classy and unspoilt.

Burgh island is a beautiful hotel but a bit quiet and cut off. Would choose the thurlestone over it most likely.

Had totally rubbish service at Saunton Sands Hotel in the summer, my friend who lives locally also reported similar issues. Nice location, but I would avoid the hotel.
