Nice area - nicest on the island (liked Crane Beach too, but overall not keen)

One just because it happened 4 days ago and is special to the fisherman in the picture, who might be me. Thread regulars will know roughly where it is, but we'll need a specific island...

I don't know where that is but is that a Permit? Difficult buggers to catch.

Nope, although I have fished Cuba and seen/cast to Permit there. 'tis the Bahamas, but where?

Thread here for anyone interested - I was/am quite excited, as you may detect: http://www.flyfishing.co.uk/saltwater-fly-fishing/...

Note that I won't tell the fishing community which island it was, but I've posted it as a Where was I! Not an island for the petrolhead, unless you're into SUVs and big ole American trucks! hehe

Been there too, but never seen a Permit, oddly.

Since you know the area, think salt - and lots of it.

A mate of mine rewrote the book on Permit (quite literally) because he found a way to catch them consistently. But then he was once World Fly Fishing Champion.

Unfortunately I know nothing about fishing.

Apparently he couldn't catch them. He got very annoyed so he stopped fishing and just watched them. He watched them for a day.
It was something about how they feed iirc.
He caught 12 in 20 minutes or something daft.
He called the world expert on Permit fishing and told him what he'd found out. The expert was mightily upset because he'd just sent the final draft of his book on Permit fishing to the publishers. He pulled the draft and added an extra chapter.
Allegedly. (Tall tales and anglers go together after all).

Interesting - there are broadly two schools of thought v-a-v fishing for permit, the static crab boys and the stripped shrimpers.

The above is true, I promise!

Anyhow, which Bahamian island was I on - maps can now be used!

Very very close, same Bahamasair route (but yes, of course I've fished Mayaguana too)

All those islands are WAY too shallow for the boats I'm normally on. I really don't know them.

Not exactly yacht central, I agree, but the few who venture this far South are rewarded.

I think Mayaguana was close enough, it's actually Great Inagua.
