Hopefully going to California for a 10 day road trip for my birthday at the end of August. What's the best place to hire the car (convertible Mustang or similar)?
Think it'll be pick up in San Fran and dropped in Vegas or possibly back to San Fran.

Google search brings up wildly different results. Anyone know the best way to do it?

if it 100% has to be a mustang then use hertz for rent this exact car

otherwise , theyre very common in cali , rent a full size or convertible (note non hertz will all be *or similar*) then see what you are offered , if they have a mustang they may swap it or offer a upgrade for a few $$ a day , theres a good chance you would get one anyway but be prepared to accept a chrysler 200 lol

We hired a convertible Mustang in San Fran last year - travel agent booked it through Dollar as they ALWAYS get Mustangs.... I was a non-believer until we picked the car up - their parking garage was full of them - no other convertibles to be seen.

The address was 2500 Mason Street and is based at a hotel.

Edit: We dropped it back at LAX without any issues, but don't know about a different state for drop off.

Yup!

All the main companies do them - I do BA + car (Avis) deals, which saves a load of money most of the time. I am pretty sure they are Group K with Avis (at Seatac there are usually loads around, all with CA plates), although I just get the most powerful petrol eating luxury Sedan they have.

+1 if it absolutely has to be Mustang. I use Hertz almost exclusively, and although they're not the cheapest, I've found they usually look after their cars, and don't play games with mystery charges after your rental.

Search online for Hertz discount codes.

if you decide hertz , go via quidco for 10% ish cashback + search for a 10% or better discount code (pm me if you get stuck)

you can also join thier gold #1 club to save waiting at the desk , its free to join

I do hope they change to the C7's soon. It's like going back to the 90s sitting in the C6 Corvette's biggrin They do make a good noise though!

Corvette looks fun! Don't forget they have a tiny boot, so pack accordingly.

Take soft bags and a lot of hotels have laundry facilities so with a bit of planning you can travel quite light.

We're doing the same trip in July. I've taken a punt on a convertible from dollar, picking up at o'farrell st in San Francisco. From the reviews I found I'm hoping for no problems getting a mustang thumbup

If you're happy with the v6 (good engine in the 2012 IMO) then don't book, just wander in off the street and see what they have.

I did this last year in Las Vegas and got one from dollar, one way hire to lax with no extra charge for one-way.

Remember though that the Adrenalin range of cars from Hertz has to be dropped off to the same place as pickup. Thats what I was told over the phone anyway. Anything else, like the run of mill v6 cars can be dropped off anywhere.

Random thoughts:
- The canyons south of LA are great. Google "canyon carving"
- I also really like driving over Topanga Canyon and its surrounding roads north of LA
- Nevada Highways 93 and 318. Actually, anywhere in the boondocks of Nevada.
- A radar detector is cheaper than a speeding ticket.
- If you can delay your trip slightly, the Silver State Classic is in September.

Angeles Crest Highway is a good one for north LA. Long, hairpins, and even a tunnel.
