Discussion
I'm going to be back in the UK for 2.5 weeks in August visiting my parents in Norfolk and would like to spend a couple of days in York as I have never been.
Can anyone give me some good tips for things to do, places to eat, pubs to visit and does anyone know of a good B&B in or around the centre?
Thanks,
Pete

There's also boat trips mooching about on the river.

Since this is Pistonheads it maybe worth checking out if there is anything at Elvington Airfield that takes your interest.
WRT York I just like to go and have a mosey around, its very suited to that sort of thing. There is plenty to look at in the town, or you can walk round most of the city walls etc. If its nice find a spot either on the river or at one of the bars that over look and enjoy the atmosphere.
Touristy things:
The Shambles,
Jorvick
National Railway Museum,
Betty's
River cruises
York Minster
A bit further away:
Benningborough Hall
Castle Howard
Collection of great driving roads and picturesque villages over towards Pickering and Helmsley.

For places to eat I'd recomend any of the following:
Dusk - Cheap and studenty, but very good food. Good spot for lunch.
1331 - A bit trendy, but again I've always had good food there.
Meltons 2 - A bit more classy, but they often have offers on from 5pm till 7:30pm.
The Blue Bycicle - Up market and one to score browinee points with the missus.
El Gaucho - An Argentinian Steak House, always busy so book ahead. If you like steak, then I highly recommend it.
For Pubs, The Yorkshire Terrier, The Three Legged Mare and The Last Drop Inn are all York Brewery pubs. Their beer is brewed inside the City Walls and Guzzler is a very good pint. I'd also recommend The Guy Fawkes (alleged birth place of the same man), The Hole in the Wall (good pub grub) and The Old White Swan (but do not eat here unless you like mircowave cooked stuff). Other good spots are The Golden Fleece, The Olde Star Inn, The House of Trembling Madness and at least a dozen more.

I'd also throw into the mix this place for food.

And if you want cheap and a bit different, I'd recommend this Gurkha restaurant - the fish curry is immense:-

I've recently been to York and went with the wife.
Suggestions:
The Whippet Inn - good burgers!
Betty's Tea Rooms - a must with female companionship. If you're into history, you can go downstairs to the toilets. Just outside is a mirror which was etched on by British, Canadian and American servicemen during WWII when the place was partly requisitioned. Tea is really good but you'll need a big wallet for food!
National Rail Museum - full of interesting blokey train stuff. I loved it. You should definitely go and see Mallard.
The Shambles - lots of olde worlde buildings and some good shops.

If you like beer (and I do) then the York Brewery tour is a good way to spend a couple of hours. It's near the train station too. There's a fantastic beer shop/pub in the Shambles area called the house of trembling madness. My friend and I often get a train down from Newcastle and stuff our back packs full of specialty beers.
The dungeon is OK if you have younger ones. A bit touristy but enjoyable all the same.

Treboom
Rudgate
Too many to mention.
Have a read here for some pubs.

Certainly did when i was there. One of the reasons I achieved a Desmond.
Aye, ain't that the truth.Anyway, The House of Trembling Madness hasn't been mentioned. I never ventured inside but did look longingly at their vast selection of beers on sale in the front. According to reviews should be quite good.
If cocktails are of any interest however, then Evil Eye Lounge right next door is probably your best bet. They do decent food and the drinks menu is impressive, if not quite to my tastes - but the GF is sure to appreciate it. Very quirky, especially upstairs. Same owners as Trembling Madness I believe.
