Great thread - i'm heading over in May for a few weeks.
I've just rented the 6.2L V8 C7 Corvette Stringray Convertible from Enterprise Exotic as well - the plan is to drive up to SF for a few days via Yosemite and then back to Vegas via the coast road, Sequoia and Death Valley - which should make the trip

Going there tomorrow, chilling Friday, canyon Saturday, hiring a McLaren and 458 Sunday, guns and buggies Monday.
Staying at Wynn, got a couple of places booked but going to wing it for the rest, but also interested in recommendations.
I'd be interested in hearing what you think of the Wynn Matt (as well as any other recommendations), will also be staying there later in the year.Staying at Wynn, got a couple of places booked but going to wing it for the rest, but also interested in recommendations.

Did this a couple of years ago - SF, Carmel, Yosemite, Lone Pine, Vegas. Lone Pine was a one night stop off - what a great place - 2 bars, one restaurant (great steaks) and a great breakfast café. Fell in with the locals, far too much to drink that night and got hustled at pool by a lass who was about 5ft tall, 18 stone and smoked cigars - boy could she play - you have been warned! Lone Pine was one of the highlights of our trip and a big recommendation!I've just rented the 6.2L V8 C7 Corvette Stringray Convertible from Enterprise Exotic as well - the plan is to drive up to SF for a few days via Yosemite and then back to Vegas via the coast road, Sequoia and Death Valley - which should make the trip

Don't suppose you visited this place on your trip did you?http://www.nepenthebigsur.com
We're doing that trip in a few weeks and I'm after somewhere very romantic near Carmel/Pismo Beach to ask her a certain question
So want somewhere stunning and somewhere for a great meal. Any recommendations would be great if you have any please?
Can anyone recommend a company to do the Grand Canyon , Hoover Dam and Lake Mead combo. Just had an email from Virgin rep who is trying to flog a trip that uses a light aircraft from Henderson to get to the Indian reservation and land in the canyon then bus shuttle to the various points including Skywalk. Price is 300 dollars each which is about 200 dollars cheaper than the ones I have seen on the net but there are hundreds all offering slightly different things. Its a minefield and obviously want to get it right first time ???
Trip above is 6 hours which is about right for what we want. Some are 12 hours FFS ( probably 3hrs each way on a coach - no thanks )

I've done a Grand Canyon tour with Grand Adventures.
It's even longer than 12hrs though! It's about 4hrs drive each way so there's no quick tours unless you fly to the airport just outside the National Park.
You stop off at the walkway along the Hoover Dam bypass bridge, rather than the actual Dam itself.
They use a minibus rather than a coach so you get to chat with your fellow tourists on the journey rather than sit quietly on a bus with 50 other people.
None of the helicopter tours that claim to go to the Grand Canyon get to the 'proper' National Park site as it is too far for them to reach.

It's a great place to eat, but might get a tad busy with tourists. Make sure you sit outside for an absolutely mesmeric view!
Any idea's on do's and don'ts with Kids.
We off next month staying at the Mandalay Bay with our 9 year old daughter. We have a little backup as my parents are along due to us getting married, and after 5 days we are off to Florida.
But I've recently heard a horror story about not being served any alcohol (not looking to get drunk with the daughter but a beer would be nice).... I've seen that she (or wee..) are not allowed to loiter in the casino's but we are allowed to pass through to get to the hotel etc....
Any other tips?

Children (ie. under 21) can walk through the casinos on the main walkways but can't stop/loiter/watch/etc.
I believe the rules on kids in bars is that they are only allowed if they are in a group that is having food.
Some of the top end hotels discourage children by banning pushchairs on whatever the American equivalent of "Health'n'Safety" is.

Consider hiring a car, that way you have the flexibility to take as long as you want. Hoover Dam is under an hour away, you can park by the road at the top to look down at the dam from the bridge then drive down and over the dam to get a closer look. There are tours inside the dam if that piques your interest too. Trip above is 6 hours which is about right for what we want. Some are 12 hours FFS ( probably 3hrs each way on a coach - no thanks )
I haven't been to the skywalk but it's about $80 each to go on. There's also a fee to get onto the reservation. Not sure how much this is. It's not that far from Vegas though, about 120 miles.
The south rim is a good place to see the canyon from but it's 280 miles one way so a bit far for a single day, although I did it in a day. On a Harley in the bitter cold too. I don't recommend that as an exercise in masochism .
If you get a car it opens up your options too, the north shore of lake mead is within easy reach and is a lovely drive.
