NYC Hotel suggestions
Discussion
just make sure you ask for a room away from teh air conditioning units....last time we went to Newyork our initial room at a hotel just off central park was over looking the airconditioning units in the centre of the building on one side, it really was quieter on the runway at JFK. I complained after the first night and we were given a much better room at the other side of the hotel the following evening..

With Airbnb the vendor doesn't get the money until after you arrive and check-in at their place. You should still check the reviews carefully, but that goes for any hotel too.
Doesn't seem they're legal-even if the owner is staying there/hosting you:http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k65...
I'm sure 1000's of people stay in 'rentals' without issue every year-just not sure I'd risk it.

Look at the reviews on T.AMy girlfriend and I spent 4 nights here - http://www.theboxhousehotel.com/ last December. It was excellent.
It's in Greenpoint, Brooklyn just across the river from Manhattan. In my opinion it was the best of both worlds. The hotel offers a free car service to the local subway station, from there the No 7 train only take about 6 mins to get to Manhattan.
As the hotel isn't on Manhattan, it was very well priced for what we got. The stardard room is like a mini apartment with loads of space. Previously, I've paid a lot of money to stay in cramped, poor quality hotel rooms on Manhattan before and the 'bang for your buck' is very poor. In future I'll be going back to the Box House.
Plus, Greenpoint is now super trendy with loads of bars and restaurants in the area.

I stay here regularly for work (it's right next door to my office) - http://jerseycity.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html.
It's on the Hudson, immediately next to the Exchange Place Path station ( http://www.panynj.gov/path/exchange-place-station.... ) which is one stop under the Hudson into the World Trade Center interchange, and you have fabulous city views like this (excuse old 'phone photos);

Rightly so - it's a really well located, well managed and individual boutique hotel. As with a lot of places in Manhattan, the rooms are quite small, but beautifully furnished and it's kind of low-rise, so no cityscape views. Being small, availability can be an issue, but I stay there whenever I can (if my clients are prepared to pay the rack-rate).Couldn't get into Hotel Giraffe last week, so stayed at the W Times Square - a single night with mediocre room service (roast chicken dinner with a couple of Bud Lites) - $649.79.
It was a little blustery weather-wise and the whole building was swaying and creaking (I was on 55th floor), which made me feel a little seasick at one point. Not great value, in my opinion, but seemingly well liked on here.
