SWMBO and I are off to the US in the last week of June!

We're spending 3 days in the Washington DC area. One day will be seeing the monuments etc in DC, one day visiting a friend in Woodbridge.

This leaves us one day to get out and see a different part of Virginia. Must be drivable there and back in a day from DC. We're looking for somewhere with good scenery, a bit historic and a bit less touristy.

I've heard Richmond or Williamsburg are nice, are they do-able in a day? What are the other options?

Cheers for any pointers,

Simon

I'm off there in July flying into Dulles. First few days will be doing the shenandoah (sic) valley which looks lovely and is closeish to DC

shenandoah-
stunning. Can easily be done in a day.
IIRC Front royal is a typical shenandoah valley town
White water rafting there too..
For something a bit more historical and about an hour or so from DC
Harpers Ferry, a whole town devoted to the civil war, the underground railroad, and river tubing smile
A couple of decent caffs too.

Gettysburg. About 2 hour drive and a great museum about the civil war, and of course, it's the site of one Lincoln's greatest speeches.

Also worth going to Arlington military cemetery. Very moving, especially the sites of the Tomb of Unknowns and JFK's grave.

The drive through the shenandoah valley is just amazing....
for some other cool civil war era sites near DC
Manassas- has an 8 mile hike guided by audio
Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania national park which i think has four battlefields on one site.

Thanks all for the replies! It sounds like a plan to Shenandoah is on the cards. It does look like a fantastic place. That road is making me want to invest in some better hired transport...
