Another for the Standard, but for a really left field suggestion we have been staying at the Wythe in Williamsburg, achingly hip but very cool in a kind of post industrial way and only in reality a few minutes from Manhatten via the 12 train. We love it.

Thanks again for suggestions, she'll need to go through them all now!

We also now need to decide how long we are spending there, as it stands we plan to arrive on Sep 11th, can't decide whether that's a good idea or not..
It's a slightly eerie feeling on 9/11, but worth it if you want to experience a different feeling to the city as it takes stock. I was in NYC on 9/11/01, and now if I'm in the area I like to drop in to St Paul's Chapel for a moment to pay my respects.

Just to put this to rest, we choose the Gansevoort in Meatpacking in the end, actually arrive in NY back from Bermuda on the 12th rather than the 11th, 3 nights then back to Dubai.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will give my thoughts on the hotel in about 6 weeks, a friend has also stayed there and reckons we will love it.

I'm posting this, sat in the main reception of the Waldorf!

Whilst the hotel is old, it's pretty much in keeping with my expectations.

Traditional is probably the best description, marble bathroom, 1930s style interior etc.

That said we're in a two double bed room which is huge, walk-in closet and it's all very acceptable!

For the money (c£250 pn for 4 people) I also think it's reasonable value for money.

Having spent the last two days in NYC, it's nice to be away from the hustle around Times Square, but somewhere central to mid-town and the main areas to visit.

Grand Central station is worth an hour of your time, it's astonishing!

I like the Peninsula on 5th / 55th.

Great location, great staff, gym/pool and a cool outdoor bar on the 22nd floor.

They cleaned it all up about 20 years ago - Left a small black square on the ceiling showing how dirty it was - See if you can spot it

The Marriott Marquis in Times Square is excellent - Husband and I stayed there for a week on our honeymoon in February. Within walking distance of just about everything, or the subway to get you there. Lovely rooms, good size, with one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in.

Lots of great bars/restaurants around the area, too. Well, obviously. It's Times Square!
There was a particularly fine establishment called Langan's, just over the other side of Times Square. Open very late, and we spent quite a bit of time in there. Fabulous atmosphere, excellent cocktails, really friendly staff. One night they had some superb live Irish music, too. Highly recommend.

Stayed at Le Parker Meridien a few times- great views if you get a Central Park facing room.

Cracking hotel- home of Burger and the famous Norma's.

Unfortunately my 9 yr old daughter has discovered "American Girl" so I've remortgaged the house to keep her sweet!

Can recommend some great restaurants- All need advance booking.

Aquavit - think of it as a Scandinavian Fat Duck.
Pampano- simply superb south american seafood.
Spice Market- near meat packing district. Great food and cocktails.
Danji - Korean food.

Have stayed at the Royalton and the Sofitel both on 44th st. Good location (midtown) which is why we choose to stay around there because its perfect if you only have a couple of days.... both fab hotels - the Royalton is a boutique style hotel but very nice - Sofitel more luxurious and spacious - Four Seasons is good too..
