Hi All,

Does anyone have an idea if the government keeps a track of your number plate every single time that you go abroad via the EuroTunnel or Ferry ?

Nothing sinister btw ... just don't like the big brother treatment !

Thanks,

Certainly do.
Most of the check in process is triggered by number plate recognition.
Wouldn't worry about it - as soon as you are on the road, you're on camera, in the UK.
The ports are no different.

Yes, the information is used by insurance companies for example to check whether people have exceeded their 30/60/90 days foreign use for single trips if they make a claim for an accident.

As far as I know, it's available to them but not something they process as a matter of course. So if I total my car in Europe they'll put a request in to find out when I left, but if everything goes smoothly then they wont.

If you exceed the maximum number of foreign days usage in your policy, your insurance drops to third party only. You will then lose any fully comp/fire/theft coverage while you are out of the UK.
