I believe you can get a same day passport from the various UK passport offices.

No overseas embassy will issue a passport any more.

what they can issue is a temporary travel document, mainly for use if you loose your passport whilst travelling, and can usually be issued on the spot / within a few days.
My wife had to get an Emergency Travel Document for a business trip to Shanghai at the Singapore High Commission as her proper passport renewal took more than 8 weeks from dispatch to return. They are only valid for one return trip.

https://www.gov.uk/emergency-travel-document
As V41LEY says, they are valid for one trip, OR the remainder of your travel itinerary depending on your specific requirements, but cannot deviate from your schedule.
They will print the itinerary you give them on the opening page so that whichever immigration officer checks your passport will know what you are up to. Let it be said that it you do deviate from that itinerary and pitch up in a country not listed it can get a little.. tense, so make sure your story is a good one. wink

I just called Liverpool, got me an appointment for one day passport on 23rd July. Furthest ahead you can call is three weeks, and that is three weeks today. There were plenty of slots open, literally any time between 10:00 and 13:30 I could have had.
can you do that as a non-resident? or do you have a UK address too?

I understand the appointment in the UK method is not normally acceptable for non-UK residents, but it works, and must be exploited.

I travel for work a LOT. Since the UK don't have ID cards that can be used for travel, I must have my passport on me at all times. Mine expires next July and I will make an appointment for a new passport in London on a day when I'll be there for work.

When I first moved to Luxembourg the local embassy issued passports. They then moved this process to Paris, and now it's only done in the UK, and look at their current postal backlog and fk ups in the press!

just cos I had to renew all the kids ones, and with these delays I was tempted to just fly over and get them all in one day, they said we couldn't do it

I've been through their webpages, Hugo, and they're really not that helpful, but you could book an appointment in advance, then fly over and renew?

yeah, it specifically rules out children's passports, for some reason

I have an address in the UK, and my credit cards are based at that address, and that seems to work for me. They did do an 'address check' while I was on the phone to make sure it was a valid address, and if my cards were not based there I would have had to show a utility bill when I made the passport application.

It would be a bit awkward if I were not allowed/able to do it this way as it would mean I have to abandon my job and move back to the UK just to get the passport that is necessary for me to do my job overseas......

I also own a rental house in the UK, but have nothing registered at that address.

My property in UK is currently being rented out. If/when I get an appointment are they going to check and find I don't live there and is it going to cause me a problem ?

I wouldnt worry too much about the UK address part, I renewed mine at Peterborough office when I was back in the UK over Xmas last year. They check the form with you in the appointment for any obvious errors and I asked them about the address part as it specifically asked for a UK address, which I don't have anymore given I live in Luxembourg. The answer was that the UK address is more just a box-ticking exercise, eg they have to state a UK address to allow the systems to proceed to the next stage of processing.

They were more than happy for me to use my parents address, but the official line is that it should be the address you are staying at when in the UK, so can be a hotel etc I believe.

Have to say, that with hindsight, spending 4 hours in Peterborough waiting for my passport was well worth it given all the current problems and delays. As per 5potturbo above, not having an ID card that can be used and having to carry my passport around for ID purposes means being without for potentially a number of weeks isn't really an option.

my housemate did this earlier in the year, she downloaded and filled out the form, sent the forms and her and her daughter's current passports back to the UK via DHL to her parents... her parents went to the Post Office and did the check and send service, when the new passports were received 10 days or so later they were sent back to us by DHL.

Total time elapsed was about 16 days I think and although the DHL element cost a few quid it wasn't astronomical.

The important thing is not to declare to DHL that it's passports you're sending as I think they refuse to carry them, we just said "documents"

Can't answer that I'm afraid...one thing I forgot to say is that she also sent the passport photos back as well.... after making 10000% sure that they met the passport office's standards.

Just renewed ours in Bulgaria. Filled in the forms and paid online, then sent old passports, proof of address here (colour copy of photo ID Card), new photos and a declaration to the Liverpool Passport Office.
Then sat back and worried at the reports of serial f*ckuppery at the Passport office until DHL finally knocked on our door 12 weeks later, delivering both passports together, in separate envelopes.

12 weeks via post simply isn't an option for me. I need my passport every day here.

Markytop: pleased to see you're still here, in the pissing rain. wink

Did mine yesterday mate. Appointment was 10am, I was straight in, called to the counter immediately, she glanced at my company letter, never read it all, glanced at my countersigned photos, told me to come back at 2pm.

I spent an interesting 3 hours in the Liverpool museums, on the river front. Well worth a visit if you have four hours to kill.

I don't think I actually needed the photos signed, as that is just if your appearance has changed significantly since your last passport was issued, but I wanted to cover all bases. You can get a nurse, copper, business owner etc to countersign them, as long as they have a UK passport themselves.

I never knew it was 'Giants' day in Liverpool, and the crowds were crazy, streets jammed, transport at a crawl, what a farce.

I now have 8 passports. silly

flew into Glasgow to do mine as appointment available, done in a couple of hours even though my photo wasn't fully correct, used the address of the hotel I was staying in that night, as long as it's a valid address no worries.

Ok, slightly different question but don't want to start a new thread.

If I enter a country with 6 months still left on my passports and stay for a couple of months, can I then transit through another country on my way home ? Surely they aren't going to query my passport if I'm heading home ?
