Hire a car from CBR and enjoy the island. Drive across to Sami, over the mountains. You can actually drive up to the top of the massive mountain (you'll know what I mean when you get there). Look out for the turtles in Argostoli harbour. The local 'Alpha' beer is good.
We came back having stayed in Katelios a couple of weeks ago.

Drive up north to Assos (where they filmed Capt. Corelli's Mandolin. It's beautiful. Also, spend at least a day at Fiskardo harbour. The restaurants and locals are brilliant. The views stunning.
Correction - it was filmed in and around Sami, on the East coast. Worth a drive over the mountains from Lassi to Sami - plenty to see around there, Drogorati Cave and Melissani Lake for instance, as well as Antisamos beach (where a lot of filming took place)...As a driver, the roads are quite an experience, smooth, flat, windy, steep, with some pretty terrifying drops at times. In our hired Fiat Cinquecento, I had fun...can't say the same for my GF.
Petani Bay Hotel/beach has superb sunset views.
When we went in August last year I did a few internet searches for the best beaches and we pretty much went to a different one wach day... with some very well hidden ones to the north...on the whole they are pebbly, painful and utterly gorgeous. The sea at that time of year the warmest I've been in, and crystal clear.
The restaurants weren't up to much, but Kefalonian meat pie is good.
Not as cheap as you'd think out there, but you will love it.

With regard beaches, do check before you set off.
They've had some pretty bad rainfall recently that has washed away some of the roads, along with an earthquake in January. Myrtos beach for instance is not accessible by road currently.
Don't think Assos is easy to get to either, I was there last week and the Villa rep said it was a pain. They've had some pretty bad rainfall recently that has washed away some of the roads, along with an earthquake in January. Myrtos beach for instance is not accessible by road currently.
Agostoli is lovely and a stones throw from Lassi, definitely do the lakes and caves already mentioned and if you go up the aenos mountain try to go when there is no cloud, stunning views.
Watch out for English drivers who have no clue in a left hooker, spent the whole holiday slamming on as idiots came around the corner in the middle of the road.
Just wanted to update this thread for anyone seraching in the future about kefalonia (personally when I research a holiday an invaluable PH google search is the first thing I do ... real people, real experiences and advice).
We had a lovely simple week in Lassi. Its 5 minute proximity to the airport meant a very quick journey door to door ... one minute we were leaving the house, the next we were sitting down by the pool.
Lassi is modern but has lots of Tavernas and some great beaches too. Loved the island, very pretty and unspoilt. Highlights were the beautiful underground cave, an afternoon at Myrtos beach with beautiful green sea and big rolling waves (getting in and out was tricky !), a gorgeous carefree day at the idyllic Asos and a trip on the ferry to Lixouri. Highly recommended.

Drive very carefully.
We were there about 6-7 years ago in a hired Cinquecento. There had been a rock fall onto one of the coast roads that had not been properly cleared. I was driving at about 10mph, totally lost control of the car, skidded and ended up stopping about. 2m away from about a 50m unguarded edge.
Terrifying - so go steady.
