well in January I hit the 'big 50' so SWMBO and I were thinking of going somewhere a little special at this time. The idea is it'll be warm but not insanely hot (which I suspect might count Oz out) with stuff to do/see rather than just lying on the beach/by the pool somewhere (though there will be some of this too!).

Given the time of year we're thinking maybe South Africa (loads to see/do) or Hawaii. NZ is off the menu as (if I can save for it) we'd like to see if we can fit in with the British Lions tour there 2017.

So has anyone out there got any interesting ideas for us to research (or indeed admonitions about where not to try!)

Being from NZ I was going to recommend there, but I see you have that one covered!

South Africa could be a good shout - lots to do and I have heard great things from friends who have travelled there to visit.

Mrs BC & I will be off to California for January. Lots to see & do including Death Valley which is not too hot then.

Read the Death Valley thread.

As others have said really.
South Africa would be a good bet.
The Garden Route might be a nice roadtrip and Cape Town is amazing of course.
Depends how long you will be visiting really, but there are plenty of options.
