Just a footnote to my original post. We stayed in a beautiful apartment overlooking Mellieha Bay. It was wonderful having breakfast on our balcony and watching the small boats and wind surfers.

We got the ferry to Gozo and visited the craft centre and the Azure Window. The colours of the Ocean here and the scenery are beyond description.

We also got a boat ride to Comino which was a great experience and also very pretty. As mentioned by others, the car museum was very interesting, with some very nice and well-presented cars. The film with Alain De Cadenet was also well worth watching.

The grand harbour in Valetta was awe inspiring for it's sheer size, as well as its beauty. We saw it from a boat, as well as on land.

The restaurants all served good food at amazingly low prices, with "Commando" in Mellieha as our favourite for quality.

The weather was in the 30s all week, and the locals were all very friendly too. All told, it's probably the best holiday that I've had.

Thanks to all who contributed to my original post.

Cheers

I'm glad this thread popped up!

We (just me and the GF) are still to book our summer holiday and we're struggling to make a decision on where to go. Reading through the thread and looking at a few hotels have got me decided on going to Malta.

Can anyone recommend the best places to stay?

We are looking for a beach holiday with a few activities thrown in, mainly sightseeing and adventuring on our own. We generally like to have a few days of relaxing and doing sod all on the beach, but some days we will like to go on trips out. We don't need anything too lively, but a few bars/restaurants near the hotel is a must.

Self catering/bed and breakfast is preferred as we generally spend all day away from the hotel anyway, but if all inclusive is worth the extra cost, then we are fine going all inclusive.

We will be going for 2 weeks on, or around (+/- 3 days) 22nd June as my holidays at work are already booked.

Any tips on car hire? I've never hired abroad (or in the UK) before, but have driven on the continent. I am thinking some days can be spent with a map and going on driving adventures.

Budget is around £1k Per person (plus spending money), this can be increased a little if it's worth the extra. Flying from Manchester if it matters.

Where I stayed in Mellieha, there was a hotel a short distance from me, called the Luna hotel. I don't know whether it's good or not.

There are lots of nice restaurants there, with Commando being our favourite and bars too. You will also be a short walk from the beach and the ferry to Gozo is around 5 miles away.

There is also a watersports and boat trip centre there as well. I had an all-inclusive vehicle hire and I'll give you details if you want them.

The reviews on tripadvisor for the Luna hotel aren't great.

I've found a hotel which i'm set on, it's in St Paul's bay, Qawra. A little compromise from the huge sandy beach on the front door, but you can't have everything! It's under budget aswel, the hotel is £1100, and flights are around £400 for both of us. It seems only budget airlines are available though.

If you could give me the details for the car hire, that'd be great. Feel free to PM, or post in here.

Just back from Malta - stayed at the Hilton which was fantastic and in a great location. In terms of car hire, avoid Avis - I wish I had read the reviews before booking as they added on extra insurance after I specifically refused it (common trick), and the first car I picked up had a dodgy clutch and wheel bearing. The driving standards in Malta leave a lot to be desired but given the car was only £80 for the week, I really valued having the freedom to travel around without relying on public transport.

If you get the chance, self-hire a boat from Bluewaves boat hire and take a trip around Comino. We hired for 3 hours, dropped anchor in the blue lagoon bay and had lunch on the boat then went for a swim - great fun!

I was really impressed by Malta and will definitely go back.

Many thanks. They have quoted €29 a day. It sounds a bit steep, but given my age, all the companies whack a surcharge on.

You may find, as I did, that many of the "cheaper" hire companies add a lot of extra charges on for damage waiver etc.

I went with the company mentioned, because there were no nasty surprises. The compulsory fuel charge was a bit high, as we were only there for a week and didn't travel that much.

If you're there for two weeks and travel a lot, then it shouldn't matter so much.

I'd always ensure I had collision damage waiver in Malta - Maltese drivers are nuts! nuts

It's interesting the way that other posters describe Maltese drivers. I found them to be very calm and patient. Not many signals though.

Mind you, I live in London and spent 6 years driving around the city and west end for a living!

Glad you enjoyed it, Mellieha is a very nice place and have stayed there many times.
We shall pop over first week in October as cannot take that summer heat anymore.
Keeping fingers crossed we do not hit one of the late summer storms which they usually get in October as they can be pretty nasty.

Thanks, we loved it! The temperature was around 32c all week and hit 34c on the day that we left. I wasn't expecting it to be so hot that early in May!
