Hi All,

Looking for a bit of help if possible.

Havent had chance to get away this summer due to changing jobs so instead of trying to get a late deal or some winter sun, me and the mrs have decided to go somewhere in january, freezing cold and snowing.

We fancy something a bit different with nice scenery and a fair bit to do.

We thought about iceland & norway to go and see the northern lights but have been told january isnt the best time to go.

Also toyed with the idea of just getting a log cabin somewhere and chilling out. (may end up killing her if theres not much to do..or her killing me).

Preferabley in europe as i hate flying and the less time in the air the better!

Thanks!

Not been, but a pal raved about Iceland following his visit. That was in the Spring though.

If you don't want to fly, how about driving down to somewhere like Chamonix?
There's a fair bit to do, even for the non skier.
The Aiguile (sp), tunnel to Italy, the train across the pistes and some great scenery.
If you ski, even better!!
Great hotels and restaurants, nightlife and get your dates right, you could be there for the Khandahar. There used to be some car ice racing too, around late Jan from memory.

The drive down could take in Mullhouse(sp), Beaune or Dijon or even a night in Geneva if your wallet can cope!!

For a long weekend i can whole heartedly recommend Tallin, Estonia. A bit like Prague but a little smaller. Nice walled city, good food and drink, not too expensive and interesting smile

My vote is reykjavik. Wow air are doing return flights for under £100 from gatwick.

A friend went to rural Finland last year and did dog sledding etc, expensive but great he said

Iceland is cool.

Also, look at Austria. Salzburg at that time of year of beautiful, so are many parts of Germany too.

We went to Iceland in the second week of February & stayed in Reykjavik. It was cold but absolutely incredible. There was daylight from around 0930 - 1700. We saw the Aurora, Humpback Whales, lots of places with unpronounceable names and simply the most stunning scenery I have encountered.

I would thoroughly recommend it for a 5 day break.
