Use your satnav and set it to avoid toll roads.
We arrived in Calais yesterday, and like a dick I never realized my satnav wouldn't work in France.....
And we had no map either. A quick browse in a motorway stop and we bought a map of France. Not exactly detailed, or easy to follow, but it got us to the hotel in Versailles.
And it lead to one of those enjoyable family bonding sessions, you know the ones, where you are driving and the wife is map reading as you traverse the Paris Peripherique in rush hour......

I am travelling down to Annecy, France from Dunkerque via Reims. I suspect that here may be some tolls which are worth avoiding and some which aren't. Anyone any experience of where to come off and on to alternative roads?
Thanks
The first autoroute down to Reims is definitely worthwhile - that NE section of France is dull. From there it depends how fast you want to get to Annecy. We stuck to the autoroutes last year but there are more interesting roads you can use although it'll probably be slower. Use www.viamichelin.com to plan routes - it'll give you the toll costs. Thanks
The slowest part of our journey was the last 5-10 miles around Annecy itself - dreadful traffic! So try to plan a route to minimise your exposure to that.
