I'm sure there must be some dog-strangling, wife-beating, child-torturing or other great 'spectacles' you could pay to go and watch if there are no bullfights on. If not why not just pay a homeless person to stick knives into another homeless person until he dies?
I think Disasterous' latest post should rely to your ovaries also!
It is clearly a troll / popcorn post. But let's play ball.
Weakening a bull physically / psychologically for days on end (as they do), and then torturing it to death in minutes (as they do), for entertainment, is not the sign of a healthy mind.
Enjoying torturing animals for fun is what some serial killers do.
Thankfully, bullfighting is fading in popularity worldwide. Only the old and poor tend to like it these days.

Well I'm neither old nor poor but do take in the Spanish culture as part of my life, I am tempted to see one before it disappears for good.Weakening a bull physically / psychologically for days on end (as they do), and then torturing it to death in minutes (as they do), for entertainment, is not the sign of a healthy mind.

Some properly ridiculous reasoning here...
I have to admit that I'm with the 'why the hell would you want to' brigade on this one.
There have many examples of practices which are brutal, barbaric and cruel which at various points in history have been dressed up as cultural or traditional events. Thankfully, the human race has moved on in most cases. The fact that there are still some which manage to continue doesn't make me want to go out and see them before they disappear, it just makes me wonder why the fk they're still happening and why any normal person would gain pleasure or entertainment from witnessing them.

Jesus Christ this place is turning more into Mumsnet by the minute. Somehow we've gone from bull fighting to FGM in the space of a couple of posts.
The point isn't that the two are somehow comparable in their maliciousness, the point is that justifying something because it's 'cultural' or 'traditional' is patently fking retarded. The Moose said:

In simple terms - if you think it's cruel and barbaric you shouldn't attend. If you enjoy cruelty to animals fill yer boots.

In all seriousness, if you're too busy being horrified at it, it's probably pointless to try and explain that sometimes, there's something to be gained in experiencing something, even if you find it appalling.
I can see that experiencing something first hand to gain one's own opinion in a factual, real and visceral sense makes a difference. Why you would choose to make those experiences ones that were appalling or horrific begs more questions than it answers IMO.
The experiences I seek out include beauty, pleasure, fun... personally I am aware of enough horror and sadness that I fully understand and appreciate without having to experience it first hand to know that I prefer the more fulfilling and uplifting activities..

There isn't much that goes on in this world that some people don't derive some sort of pleasure out of. We are also all made differently so share differing views, enjoyments, likes and interests. That's what makes people so interesting.
The fact that bull fighting is even to this day reasonably popular must mean that a good chunk of people still enjoy attending. That doesn't mean that they all go home and start being cruel to their animals or turn into serial killers (and whatever other ridiculous comparisons have been made in this thread). I'm a great believer that you shouldn't judge situations until you've been in them. I'd like to go to a bull fight, experience the atmosphere, experience what the Spanishians have enjoyed for so many years and approach it with an open mind and draw my own conclusions. Yes, I've seen bull fighting on TV/Internet etc but these things are always different in real life.
To answer the other question posted about attending a public execution - the answer is no I wouldn't - from what I've read it's a rather unsafe event to go to, especially as an outsider/foreigner.
I must say that, especially in this country, we are far too concerned about animals, in many instances to the detriment of human beings. I find that a bit odd personally.

Experiencing is one thing, but by paying to view it, you are part of it.Quickmoose said:

Likewise. But I completely understand that in a sanitised modern world, free from a lot of the horrors seen by previous generations, some are driven seek out darker stuff to help focus their opinions and beliefs.
personal opinion and everyone being different - taken into account etc, but that to me sounds like a load of weak toss to justify a less than honourable interest in 'darker' stuff.Seeking out and viewing the instruments of torture, or talking to people that have witnessed it...maybe, but paying to see torture continue first hand?...nah, I ain't buyin' that.
