Like I say, it's not something that interests or appeals to me, but I do understand the appeal. Can't really say more than that.

There isn't much that goes on in this world that some people don't derive some sort of pleasure out of. We are also all made differently so share differing views, enjoyments, likes and interests. That's what makes people so interesting.

The fact that bull fighting is even to this day reasonably popular must mean that a good chunk of people still enjoy attending. That doesn't mean that they all go home and start being cruel to their animals or turn into serial killers (and whatever other ridiculous comparisons have been made in this thread). I'm a great believer that you shouldn't judge situations until you've been in them. I'd like to go to a bull fight, experience the atmosphere, experience what the Spanishians have enjoyed for so many years and approach it with an open mind and draw my own conclusions. Yes, I've seen bull fighting on TV/Internet etc but these things are always different in real life.

To answer the other question posted about attending a public execution - the answer is no I wouldn't - from what I've read it's a rather unsafe event to go to, especially as an outsider/foreigner.

I must say that, especially in this country, we are far too concerned about animals, in many instances to the detriment of human beings. I find that a bit odd personally.
I understand what you are saying. You enjoy the atmosphere, the excitement. You want a "thrill".

In my opinion there are more humane ways of getting your "thrill". Try bungee jumping.

Surely the OP can come with a better cover-story for dressing up bloodlust as "culture", "research" or "experience" wink

Jesus Christ this place is turning more into Mumsnet by the minute. Somehow we've gone from bull fighting to FGM in the space of a couple of posts.
The point being made is that just because something is legal, cultural and traditional within a certain society, doesn't mean it isn't just plain wrong. And if you decide it is wrong, why would you give the event support by attending?

That question is equally valid for bullfighting, FGM, public hanging, cockfighting, or whatever.

Precisely. It's just a shame that it needs explaining.

Just like bear baiting, dog fighting and stoning women to death is part of the culture in other countries, that makes it okay to go along and encourage it by spectating????

Bull fighting is a disgraceful abomination and I find it impossible to believe it is still allowed in a so-called civilized EU country!

Those clowns in Brussels are doing their best to regulate everything else in Europe, from curved bananas to car modifications, but they don't seem to be bothered about animal cruelty.

Rant over.

Don't get me started! As well you know, fishing is exactly the same as slicing a woman's fanny off so if you can even think about catching a trout, you might as well get the fanny-knife out yourself because you're tacitly supporting that, as well as genocide and probably terrorism. It's what any normal person thinks.

I STILL don't agree with Bullfighting, and wouldn't fancy it myself, but I think folk need a bit of perspective here.

In all seriousness, if you're too busy being horrified at it, it's probably pointless to try and explain that sometimes, there's something to be gained in experiencing something, even if you find it appalling.
Except where experiencing something enables that something to continue in the future. Which if you buy bullfighting tickets you are doing so.

OP - if you visit Portugal they have bullfighting but without killing the bulls (well not out front anyway).

In Ecuador the main celebration of the year has for about 400 years involved bullfighting. The government recently banned 'killing animals for entertainment' . Great, you might think. Except what happens now is that the bullfights still go on in exactly the same way, except that at the end, rather than being killed by the matador, the bull is lead out of the ring and is killed out of the sight of the public. Is the bull any better off?

Absolutely not, but if no-one watched the bullfight at all, would they continue doing it?

Well, if the object of the exercise was to:

1. Hook the fish
2. Cut its fins off
3. Put it back into a small pond
4. Arrange for some 12-year-olds to then stab it until it bleeds a lot
5. Put it on a hot rock where it slowly cooks to death

Then - yes.
