As I always say to this, going east and South from Phucket round Phang Na bay is like a journey back in time, Ah Nang is like Phucket 10 years ago now. Go South and East of Krabbie toward Trang and you will not see a European face, but resorts are simple, follow the raod east from Krabbie to Sadoh, and then South toward Trang, Pak Meng has huge flat beaches great sea food and simple accomadation, Yoyo Beach a little further south has no one on it, but only huts for accomadation. You will need a car, great road on a big bike if you can ride, but don't hire one unless you know how to ride it is not a place to learn.
There is nothing in Trang, dirty town never got going, was supposed to be a big resort for Japenese golfers, hotel built but caught in finacial problems in 98 and never finished, further south of Trang is not worth it, unless you want to keep going and get a ferry to Langkowi.

One option. Base yourself in KL and use it as a hub for travelling all over Asia from KLIA2 (cheaply) with AirAsia.
There are many other budget carriers that fly from the international hubs that work better, also all domestic flights in Thailand do not get charged airport taxes .... so can fly Bangkok or NOK from BKK to anywhere in thailand for bobbins, for example GBP50 will get your a return to Chang Mai, or Phuket (booked the day before) and you even get a meal thrown in .....

also concider Tiger, JetStar, VietJet and more, there are so many other budget carriers too ..

I travel extensively around the region and Thailand is hard to beat.

Thailand - Yes (best food, spas, hotels, transport and shopping in the region - if not the world in many cases)
Vietnam - Yes
Cambodia - Yes
Bali - No, too far, another 2 hours and you're in Australia. Nice place though.
Malaysia - No, nothing to recommend
Indonesia - Harder work, but some good places.

I'd base myself in Thailand and do a couple of side trips to Ho Chi Minh and Siem Reap. Bangkok (DMK) is a hub for Air Asia Thai so plenty of places to go from here. They have a sale on at the moment so if you know you dates you can get tickets for almost nothing.

Also if you fly Thai from the UK to Thailand you can often get side trips for nothing as part of promotions.
