I haven't been in years and much looking forward to a short trip at the end of September.

What I really want to do is eat my head off and experience the very best NYC has to offer in general.

Things like:

1. Best burgers

2. Pizza

3. Ice cream

4. Walks

5. Museums

6. Shops

7. Off the beaten track

8. Local gems

Could veterans of NYC help?

Googling this on the net, just seems to give you very vanilla stuff...

The Museum Of Natural History next to Central Park is very good. Quite a nice walk to get there too. Get there for the doors opening to enjoy it before it gets crowded.

It's worth getting one of the sightseeing bus passes too with VIP access. You can then take the tour buses all over town, getting audio tours as you go, and get off where you want. Cheaper and more interesting than taking taxis everywhere. The VIP access is useful as it means you can skip the queues and sit on the top deck.

Couldn't tell you about burger places but good Pizza can be had at Lombardi's on the corner of Mott St & Spring St. Also, Ignazio's which is almost under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn.

For walks, I do enjoy the highline but I have gone to the east of Manhattan (17th st) and walked down toward the 3 bridges and around to the west side of the Island. You may get blisters.

I'm in NYC at the moment, and can second Bobby Vans Grill, it's on 50th between 6th and 7th.

Grand Central is worth an hour of your time, whilst there. All in at Juniors for cheesecake, it's on the food concourse

Carnegie Deli

Awesome place, gets very busy though so will need to wait, but was worth it I thought.

It's on 7th Avenue, next to 55th street.

EDIT:

Another one that may be worth a visit, just for the experience, is Ellens Stardust Diner

Food = get a cronut in the morning...
Buildings = Empire State and Chrysler Buildings...
Odd but fun = go visit the Debt Clock and watch America's debt spiralling into the trillions of dollars by the second...

Have you searched this forum? A few recent posts on NYC eats

Keens Steakhouse? I'd avoid. Worst meal of our trip there, overrated.

Spicemarket, Pampona, Daijin , and if you have the budget, Aquavit.

Carnegie Deli- a celebration of American excess, but it doesn't actually serve up quality deli food. Famous for their sandwiches and cheesecakes, neither were that special.

Lots of better places to go....
Try some of the roof top bars too- great views.

For dinner try Tony Di Napoli's restaurant in midtown bang in the theatre district. Amazing Italian food.

I'd agree with this - wasn't overly impressed with the quality, however the quantity actually put me off pastrami for months.

For pizza you could try Co. ( www.co-pane.com)- a bit up itself, but a decent pizza and some really nice beers on offer.

We went there in March of last year. It was the best meal of our trip and the service was excellent. I nearly fell off my bar stool at the cost of some of the cocktails and whisky we had in the bar though!

Never went to Carnegie Deli though. We went to Katz deli instead. My pastrami sandwich was a ridiculous size but I still ate it all. And the pickles as my wife couldn't stand them. yum

Another vote for here for breakfast - was 100 yds from our hotel - perfect, classic diner but very nice grub.

Katz deli for some big sandwiches
Yep, had one last week. My wife couldn't finish hers. I'd also recommend The Meatball Shop at 64 Greenwich Ave and a boozy cupcake from Prohibition Bakery at 9 Clinton St.
