Hi everyone,

Fiancée and I are looking to get away for a couple of weeks in September and looking for some recommendations.

We're not massively into big package holidays having backpacked around Peru / Bolivia last year and planning the same in Columbia for our honeymoon next year.

Looking for a relatively affordable couple of weeks with some interesting places to walk / cycle too and the ability to catch some rays and relax.

So far we've started to look at the nicer parts of the Canaries and Balearics but are just getting confused with where is good.

Any recommendations?

Majorca is great in September, mostly chav free due to the schools going back, lovely weather, just avoid Magaluf, the rest of the island is fabulous. Best bits being Port de Pollensa, Soller, Cala D'or plus the three resorts in one Cala Bona- Cala Millor-Sa Coma. Hire a car and explore the north west coast, the roads and sceneries are epic.

We went to Paphos in November for the o/h's birthday. Temperatures were nice, mid 20's with a warm breeze. No kids, plenty of walks, horse riding and excursions. Distinct lack of nobheads (guess they were on the other side of the island)

I like Gran Canaria, but I'd rather go further round from the airport, last time stopped in Mogan and got a car from the town centre, then drove wherever we wanted. Playa/Maspolomas area wasnt really for us, went up into the mountains instead

ETa - also worth considering Croatia, Split area or Hvar (but watch out for gap year Trustafarians with Macbooks)

The Almeria region in Southern Spain is classed as desert with very low rainfall. The Cabo de Nijar National park is truly stunning with plenty of places to walk. Anywhere round there is totally unspoilt and remains one of my favourite places. I've been in September and had great weather all week.

If you stay somewhere like Roquetas de Mar (itself a bit dull), you can strike north up and over the Sierra Nevada mountain range via Vicar and La Calahorra (Moorish castle)and then head up to Granada and see The Alhambra Palace and then drive up the Sierra Nevada itself (often used by car manufacturers to test new models).

Just bear in mind that the altitude can change the weather from hot sun to torrential downpours (none last time we went).

I'd go far more often if our local airport serviced Almeria airport. Just do it. You won't be disappointed.

I've done all four Canaries. They are equally prone to having an "off week". Of the four, Tenerife has most to do but the weather can be rainy in the northern part. The great part about Tenerife is that even if it's raining, you drive above the clouds to Mount Teide and you find the sun again. Lots of walking round that area too and spectacular scenery. Just avoid the tourist costa. I stayed at an apartment at El Medano which offered great access to the mountain road and was across the road from a barely used beach http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/el-medano... (no personal interest, just great value and within a few miles of the airport).

We are off to Croatia in a few weeks, should be good weather (but then again you just never know wherever you go!)

Staying in Zadar, which is a good location really, as its good for the islands (can do boat trips or hire a ba=oat for about 100euros a day) good national parks for walking, swimming, sightseeing etc.

managed to rustle up a good deal, £85 flights each, £250 for a beach front apartment and £43.46 for a hire car. Job jobbed!

Hi There,

We ended up going for a week in Gumbet, Turkey at a small resort as the weather looked great for that time of the year smile

Bloody fantastic villa but the sun is not around too much in the pool area in October (it may well be better in September) although there is a rooftop terrace which gets the sun all day long (if you care to hang out there and swelter!). There is also plenty to do there with roman/greek ruins in abundance just a short drive away.
