Nobody mentioned anywhere in Switzerland ? I remember Lucerne being a really nice place.
The problem with Switzerland is that you'd expect the strap on with which they shaft you to be made out of solid gold encrusted with diamonds, given the price of everything there!

I had a meal in Geneva earlier this year. A bowl of very average spaghetti carbonara and a half litre of mineral water in a bog standard neighbourhood restaurant? That'll be £28 please, sir!

Two days later, I had a similar meal for half the price at a mountain top restaurant in Val D'Isere. I reckon Switzerland has to be the only place on the planet that can make the top of a ski station feel cheap!!! hehe

Corfu, everyone heads straight for the resorts ignoring this Venetian city. One of the few places in Greece with proper plumbing.

Vilnius. Good value (and good) food & drink, friendly locals & more history than you could possibly imagine.

Really loved Tallinn, Estonia, really loved Marrakesh and dijon.
Off to Zadar, Croatia in a few weeks. Will repot back!

I'd recommend Chisinau, capital of Moldova. It's a 3 hour flight, direct from Stansted, surrounding the city are the largest wine cellars/caves in the world which are a great visit, some great historical sites, the nightlife is good (and cheap!) and there is plenty to entertain for a short break.

I'll happily buy you a beer should you visit!

Zadar is a very nice, chic sort of place.

If you can travel further down the coast, make sure you visit Trogir. A real jewel in the Adriatic.

Nin is worth a visit - I've stayed in Petracne before, it was beautiful!

I like Hamburg, it's easy enough to get to, but you can run out of things to do if you're not really into drinking and the odd bit of debauchery.

Also, consider Copenhagen if not already done. We're off there in January, I've been before - it was a toss up between that and Bergen in Norway, mainly because SAS owe me some flights and they go to those places direct from Manchester

Slightly left field, but St.John's, Newfoundland, is less than 5.5 hours direct from London. Three days would exhaust the attractions, but by christ it's a good night out....

San Sebastián?
+ 1 here!

San Sebastian is the foodie centre of Europe these days. A central pedestrianised area full of chic shops, bars, restaurants and beautiful people. Stay in the Mercure hotel which is situated on the top of the headland overlooking the bay of San Sebastian (not an amazing hotel or anything but positioned perfectly for ocean views and an amazing elevated panoramic view of the town. We have stayed there twice on two Spain-centric Eurohoons and it is by far one of our favourite places to stop and meander amongst the Eurochic.

Lisbon - not many capital cities in the list smile

Lots of history, and they were very friendly towards the Brits.
