Another vote for San Sebastián , can't live without my annual visit !
I like the look of the place. How do you get there? Looks like an arduous journey from Manchester - Man to Heathrow to Madrid to San Sebastian equalling 9hrs flying.JQ said:

Makes me realise what a lucky boy I am as have been to most of the places people have listed, and some are likely to be visited soon. Eastern Europe is somewhere I need to explore further at some point.
Moscow is the most different of places you can go within 5 hours. Stunning place and very friendly with excellent nightlife.
Did Lisbon the other week for first time and was very impressed.
Two that have already been mentioned can be linked together. Vienna and Bratislava via the high speed boat (approx 45 mins). Very eerie to think those in communist Bratislava could see those in Austria living in freedom.

I really liked Turin
I had to go to Turin for a work exhibition/conference thing a few years ago.We stayed in the hotel in the old FIAT factory - which meant we were able to access the rooftop test track as featured in the Italian Job.
That, plus being able to spot other areas used in the film make it a great place to visit.

I'd recommend Chisinau, capital of Moldova. It's a 3 hour flight, direct from Stansted, surrounding the city are the largest wine cellars/caves in the world which are a great visit, some great historical sites, the nightlife is good (and cheap!) and there is plenty to entertain for a short break.
I'll happily buy you a beer should you visit!
I went to watch scotland play a few years ago, the next day was the national independence day, it was a great laugh, dancing with proper gypsy types in the street (October?)I'll happily buy you a beer should you visit!
it's cheap alright, but it's not exactly glamourous!
Ljubljana is a lovely city, my favourite in E Europe, also lots of wine cellars etc, couple of places around there like Celje and Lake Bled
Vilnius is a nice spot too, Kaunas also
Try Rotterdam for a few days.
The Euromast gives you a nice few over the city. The Spido will take you on the river Maas for a couple of hrs.Plenty of shopping if that is what you like and plenty of cafes and restaurants.
You don't have to pay a fortune for coffee and cake.Go to the big shop Hema.
The Euro has spoiled a lot on the continent all prices have gone up.Just watch what you pay and if you don't like it walk away.

Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic
Pretty small city, but the nightlife has been excellent every time I've been there. Like a miniature Prague, but cheaper and without the tourists. Some pretty great roads and historic towns in the area as well.
I also haven't seen Oslo being mentioned anywhere. Expensive place though.
Munich was pretty fun as well, which I didn't expect at all, but it's probably not underrated.
I'll confirm that
Bologna
Ljubljana
Zadar
Budapest
Bratislava
Krakow
Wroclaw
Copenhagen
Istanbul
were pretty good suggestions and are all worth visiting.
Stay the hell away from Milan, Paris, Brussels, Bergen, Lausanne, Interlaken, Casablanca and Cairo though. While not all terrible, there are usually far more interesting places nearby.

The Meridien Lingotto. One of the most characterful hotels I've ever stayed in! I've never slept in a room with 20 foot ceilings before!
