I hate that one fking loud clapper that wants to out clap all the rest of the retards.

Oooohh look at me and how manly I can clap.

Die.
That'd be me. I make sure to ask around to see if anyone noticed my manly clapping. I imagine so it's so fuc*ing loud.

I also make sure I am the last person to clap. No matter how much it takes. Sometimes, if I'm up against someone really stubborn, it can take a fair few minutes of back and forth single claps.

Very much a job well done and must have taken some serious skill.

You don't compliment a chief as a rule, they are just doing their job, but occasionally you are served a plate that is so divine that you can't help but wish to pass on your compliments to the chief. Same thing, only they tend to get upset these days if you try to go to the cockpit to thank them wink
Tell me about it, frown Still, at least it resulted in a free holiday to Cuba.

Only had clapping once, and that was a pretty dodgy landing. Most of the way in was dropping in air pockets and having to gain altitude between them. That was between the glimpes of the runway out of the windows on both sides at different points with an icy runway. Normally no problems in planes, but that was a nervous time with everyone looking at each other going "oh crap" as we came in.

Italians are the worst for it (Mrs Smythe is Italian so we go over to see the outlaws a fair bit). It's always on Ryanair and they clap regardless of a good/bad landing. What do they do if we crash? Boo?? smile

Not clapping but had to laugh at a take-off from a few years ago.

Engine revs, brake released and a fairly slow amble down the runway. Several seconds after take-off was expected some bloke at the back shouts 'coooome on son!'

Much relieved laughter.

Turkey isn't especially traditional in the UK.
Which UK do you live in ? The average weight of a Christmas turkey is 5.5kg/12lb. Approx 10 million are eaten in UK every Christmas. In the US approx. 60 million are eaten at Thanksgiving

Very strong winds, BA shuttle coming into Edinburgh being knocked all over the place, the sudden vertical shifts being the most disconcerting, first attempt at landing aborted at a fairly late stage. Whimpering, crying, moaning was increasing as one of the pilots calmly announced that a go around and second approach would be attempted from a different vector.

The pilots dumped the plane from a seemingly too-high height onto the tarmac with the hardest hit i've ever experienced.

Crying, clapping, cheering went on for some time....

I disagree. The only place where the plane erupts in to spontaneous applause without fail is Funchal on landing. In my experience it doesn't seem to matter which airline either; TAP, EasyJet, Monarch. I read somewhere that it is the favorite airport to attempt on Flight Simulators.

Do you remember the old runway ??
A damned sight shorter and as you came around the headland, you could spot a couple of plane 'carcasses' down by the sea !! yikes

I've experienced it 5 or 6 times in the few hundred flights (15 years of lots of business travel) I've taken to date.

On all but one of those occasions, it was because the aircraft was full of Americans who, I presume, were applauding the Almighty God for granting them the temporary gift of flight without smiting them down with a lightning bolt or something as we performed a perfectly routine landing.

On the other occasion, it was on a BA Cityhopper thing from Amsterdam to Gatwick which felt like a rollercoaster on final approach. The utter relief in the pilot's voice when he welcomed us to "a rather unexpectedly windy Gatwick airport" once we were on the tarmac was clear for all to hear, and I'm pretty sure every single person on the aircraft was applauding him!

Flew into Vegas a couple of years back, never had such turbulence, my wife was puking as were many others, screams going up when it dropped or shuddered.

The landing was one of those where the plane doesn't feel like its pointing straight, up and to the right at a very odd angle, it seemed to float, thought it was going to be gentle but it dropped like a stone and landed with a bang, several overhead bins opened and stuff fell out, it bounced around quite a bit and felt like the pilot couldn't get the front down, seemed to be for ages and then when the front got down there was some pretty vigorous braking and howling engines on reverse thrust, when it got to that point where you know its under full control at sensible speed the cheers and clapping started, I joined in biggrin

I'm abroad at the moment, flying back on Friday, not the greatest flyer. I really wish I hadn't read that story!

Had same thing flying into Barcelona a year or so back - really bad wind shear and several aborted attempts at landing with last sec pull ups...... Mr BC asked me what was wrong and I explained the effect of wind sheer and shortly after the Pilot briefed the all the plane regarding the pesky issues of wind shear on approach.

Mrs BC asked me how many times they try to land and I said till they run out of fuel or it has the wings torn off the plane in which case we'll get a landing fairly quickly

She wasn't amused by my humor and when we did eventually land (pretty much all the plane cheered or clapped or both) for someone who doesn't drink alcohol she got rather drunk...........

I recently travelled Ryanair to Dublin from Ringo Star Airport, and the flight was so short at 28 mins from Door Shutting to Landing, that I actually enjoyed flying for once. Imagine my surprise when they had music to trumpet the landing and then clapping. The staff were happy too. Makes a change.

The only other time I have witnessed clapping was a Lufthansa Flight that aborted it's landing (about 200 ft from the ground) at Birmingham due to heavy cross winds, and eventually at East Midlands. It came in almost vertical over Kegworth and the M1, before using the whole runway to stop. I was bricking it to be honest. When people started clapping, I had bloody great tears in my eyes.

It's mad don't you think? You hardly hear about planes crashing there all the time. The pilots are trained to land on that runway plus it's their job smile

I am pretty comfortable with flying and the whole turbulence thing but that one rattled me !

Only other one was a night flight on a little Embraer into Glasgow, plane was, and the only way I can describe it "waddling", flopping from side to side as it was coming in, was very low, felt like it was in the flare and there was a Muslim guy near to me praying biggrin and the next thing I realise we are heading skywards again, come round for another go and no more waddling !
