Things to do in Lanzarote?

We’re off to Lanzarote in a few days time. Never been before, but have been to Tenerife a few times.
We’re generally having a chill holiday sitting around the pool (rented villa in Playa Blanca) etc, but we would like to do the odd day out to explore a bit. Can anyone recommend things to do in Lanzarote?

Caves de Los Verdes (surprise at the end is fun)
Lunch in Orzola by the Harbour
Mirador del Rio (big cliffs and occasional sightiings of whales in the strait between Lanz and La Graciosa)
Beach at Famara is excellent for surfing/kiteboarding (bit of a rip though so watch the kids)
Montagnes del Fuego - Timanfaya (Fire Mountains) - Have your Chicken barbecued over the volcano vent, excellent coach ride included in entrance fee
The drive from Teguise to Arrieta via Haria is good fun, some excellent views
Puerto Calero is a new harbour from which there are good fishing trips to be had as well as a submarine excursion

Love Mirador, the caves and Timanfaya. The coach ride had a few tight turns didnt it. We went to Mirador twice as the first time it was misty, the second time it was bright sunshine and the views are impressive.Lunch in Orzola by the Harbour

We also do the same thing rent a villa and chill for the week. I also managed to get a trip to the go kart track which is a decent size, its near Calle del Caboso.
Definately going back out there again.
For some food, head to El Golfo and the restaurant on the sea front - try and time it for sunset, you'll not be disappointed. Be careful though, it can get expensive! There is also a green pool (naturally occurring) near the restaurant which acted as a back drop for a film - can't remember which one!

Lagomar restaurant - once a house owned by Omar Sharif is a great experience. Definitely visit Famara & if you have time, have a meal in Caleta de Famara, the village at the bottom of the cliffs - amazing sea food.
Cesar Manrique museum is well worth a look. You'll see his influence everywhere in Lanzarote. Otherwise I'd go with the suggestions above. Lanzarote is a surprisingly interesting place once you look beyond the lager & kebab stereotype & it's very beautiful in a lunar land scape kind of way.

Which is why, since my first visit in 1983, I have been back almost every year. I use it for my 1-week "chill & read" holiday......NormalWisdom said:

Fully agree with the sentiment. I went for years every November to paraglide & from that, we uncovered loads of little places you'd never find on a week's package tour. The farmers club restaurant, the amazing tapas bar up the side of the supermarket in Tias, El Convento in Arrecife and so on. I love the place.Loads to have a look at in Lanzo...

I find Lanzarote is not great for things to see.
El Golfo - scenic black sand beach where Raquel Welch once filmed One Million Years BC
Timanfaya - spoilt by being coach only (Tenerife is way better)and seeing everything through the tinted windows.

Teguise - small market town with a little museum on the hill telling how they exported residents to South America, to populate it.
Costa Teguise - good for watersports but can be windy.
Valley of 1000 Palms - again, nice scenic route but often a lot of coaches.
People go on about Papagayo Beach but it's nothing special. you're better off just touring round the island and enjoying the scenery.
Good snorkelling round Puerto del Carmen and along there but, by gum, the water can be cold.

Went to the Omar Sharif house yesterday + el golfo. The Sharif house was quite odd. Such a small house given thesize of the grounds and the way it was built. Well worth the cost though.There are also some companies that do beach buggy safaris which are pretty good.
El golfo was a nice way to round the day off. A nice drive through the lava fields (which always amaze me at how inhospitable that are), and then exploring el golfo. We stopped off a few other points around the cliffs.
Its a pity people come to places like this and don't properly visit. In the cave trip we were the only English people there, and at the sharif house there were about 4 families walking around.
Talking to the villa owners (when they came to clean the pool) they said that all inclusive deals are killing the island. People would rather sit in their complex consuming "free" beer and chips.

The locals in Cyprus said exactly the same when I went last month - Never done AI and never will, the idea of free beer and English breakfast everyday on holiday repulses me, no point in going away!!98elise said:

There again, some villa rentals are a little unrealistic.
The good side is that I drove round Gran Canaria in February, in scorching weather and barely saw anybody. It was like Fantasy Island.
