The better half and I have booked a week in a lovely cottage in Boscastle in October, would be grateful for any recommendations of what to do, what to avoid, where to eat etc as we've never been anywhere near the area.

We'll have the car, a dog, some wellies and a raincoat so outdoorsy things or those within a shortish drive are grand.

We're obviously near beaches, seaside towns, Cornwall AONB and Dartmoor national park but as this provides a multitude of options we're looking for specifics - maybe hidden gems of beaches, lovely seaside towns that aren't that well known, any ideas welcomed.

There's Tintagel Castle down the coast. Alleged to be the site of Camelot.

If you can be bothered to drive down the south coast then the river Fowey is worth visiting. If you're getting rainy weather the goliath waterfalls are lovely and in a really great setting. Excellent walks all around the Fowey.

Goliath falls are near Liskeard btw. There are some well planned circular walks.

Boscastle itself is lovely, but small! As said above, Tintagel Castle is worth a visit.

Some fantastic coast walks around there, lots of beaches/towns etc depending on how far you want to travel. St Nectans Glen if you're a bit 'hippy' maybe?

Walk to Tintagel along the coast path - its a great section to walk

Walk south west from Tintagel - another great walk

Visit Rock & Padstow - see the Betjeman church at Daymer

Drive to Camelford (find the funny little turning) and then walk up to Brown Willy and Roughtor

Visit Bedruthan Steps and have lunch in the little NT cafe - best in the world

..and so on

..and if you get bored, if you pop into Wadebridge, there's a bit of painting still to do at my place which I couldn't manage to complete on my last visit............

Thanks very much for the suggestions so far folks, we do like a good walk as does the dog (and are used to doing a fair distance), any that have good pubs/restaurants at the end or along the way are especially appealing smile

That time of year is a lovely time to visit as the weather is still generally good and most of the tourists have long since departed.

If you get a nice clear day then from Boscastle it's definitely worth a coastal drive south and through Port Gaverne into Port Isaac. The set of Doc Martin. I would usually avoid in peak season, but it should be quieter at this time of year and is quaint with a good fish stall/restaurant. Heading further south St Ives is absolutely beautiful, with plenty to do even on a wet day. It has the Tate Gallery/Barbara Hepworth Museum, boat trips, Boutiquey shops and lots of good restaurants/pubs/bars. Heading out of St Ives south the coast road down towards Lands End is a cracking lazy scenic drive. I would avoid the Lands End stop off though unless you really want a photo by the sign! It's rip off tourist hell. Sennen Cove is a better place to stop

Minack Theatre (East of Lands End) worth seeing too. Though, not sure there are any performances that time of year.
