Hey

Going to Germany late this month to do a running event. As part of that I like to use the same energy gels, food and drinks as I have in the UK. These will almost certainly exceed the 100ml liquid rule for 'carry on'. Bottles are 500ml each. Gels will be numerous sachets of 45g each. And the food will be some 200g rice desserts (guess the brand wink I think these are a German brand anyway so "should" be available over there if worst comes to worst. See edit below)

So I think I have to put it in my checked/hold luggage. Initial plan is a couple of sealed clear Tupperware boxes. Potentially with ice surrounding it to keep it cool. Not sure though as it may look like a bomb! laugheek

But BA's site is vague about the rules of doing so. As far as I can make out I can take as much as I want (not exceeding my weight limit) But there seems to be no restriction on sizes when it's not in the seating part of the plane. Essentially I think I count as "importing" the products to the destination country and as a result I'm well under the booze and fags regulations if there were to be applied from Spirits to sugary drinks

I contacted BA by email and "Ramdas" the (presumably) Indian call centre "individual" sent me a link to the rules for the USA and reiterated the 100ml carry on regs. Not very relevant!

Anyone have any experience of taking food abroad? Any tips?

Cheers

EDIT
If anyone can tell me the names of the equivalent Tesco/Sainsbugs/Asda in Germany that'd be cool. Ignore the cheapo Netto/Lidl equivilents

Main supermarkets in Germany - Edeka, Tenglemann (then Aldi, Lidl, Penny etc)

Probably don't need ice in the suitcase as aircraft hold is pretty cold. I often pack locally brought drink in the suitcase - Have walked through security with 10 steaks in the carry-on (don't ask lick )

Within the EU and the types of food that you are planning on carrying, you will be fine. Nothing to worry about.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the temperature either, the aircraft hold is very, very cold and none of our products sound temperature sensitive.

Just to update. No problems at all going with the stuff in the hold. Though of course would have been nice if BA had put everyone's bags in the same plane! And not just text us to tell us "oops sorry" when we got there

Kaisers is the most equivalent supermarket to the UK ones in Germany.

And the (younger than me) UK border guy was OK, (just doing his job) but I felt that if I WAS a terrorist his questions about my journey would have been no problem at all. Do you live here? (Well yes I sound pretty English and have lived here since birth) Why did you only go for a long weekend? Travelling alone?
