We have had rubbish snow for the last 5 years so feel for the people booked in for Christmas!

This year we have resisted the temptation book early and have all agreed to book once the snow arrives.
Have you noticed that the season has been moving backwards for a number of years ie now mid Jan onwards to mid April

I guess Sweden Finland Iceland (Russia) Canada and Northern USA or Japan are the options available - all at significantly more £ than the Alps.
With the collapse of the Rubble are there any cheap deals in Russia? Bit of skiing plus rebuild international relationships!

Yesterday there was supposed to be 10cm of snow between Xmas day and Boxing Day.

It's now down to 9cm...followed by no more after that.

-1 of 650km of piestes open. Fan-fking-tastic.

Packed the swimming trunks already.

I wonder if there's someone renting quad bikes to explore the area...

I've heard that several resorts are letting mountain bikes go on chairs as per the summer, so take your bikes guys!

Just been for a lovely countryside walk, up to ~1500m. No snow to be seen anywhere.

Don't think I would risk a week in Sochi! Pay a bit extra and head out to Japan.

We're heading to Chamonix / Les Houches area on Saturday for a week. The lifts are supposed to fully open the day we arrive, although last year they were already open mid-Dec, so certainly not looking as good this time round!

Anyone else driving down Saturday?
I'll be skiing there on Saturday but the lifts won't be fully open. Only Grand Montets really.
Can I ask how it was at the top of grand montet yesterday? We arrived last night and only been into town today as we've heard the skiing is a bit miserable this year.

Trying to work out what to do tomorrow re skiing. Anyone got any suggestions... Happy to drive up to 1.5 hours each way. Anyone at courmayeur? Verbier?

3hrs driving a day + skiing ouch. Not much of a holiday - what about shorts on and enjoy the SPA?

In Avoriaz at the moment. There's reasonable snow but pretty hard packed and not a lot of cover in places. About 50% of the runs were open today. The restrictions are in place about lift passes but we were pre booked and the ski school reserved enough to cover their needs so all good on that front.

No new snow forecast till boxing day so probably hit or miss if the runs will hold up to the numbers till then. Canons are running pretty much constantly though.

Feel for those booked up this week. Been following the snow reports for a few weeks and its grim reading. I'm booked up for mayrhoffen on 31st January. Starting to worry now. I believe there is a glacier near by but this will be rammed if there is no snow lower down. Snow dance required.

Loads of colleagues headed to France, Austria and Switzerland over the weekend for their annual Christmas ski trips. None of the resorts they're heading to have significant snow, which is a real shame. Some of them, as suggested above, have put their bike racks on their cars and taken their MTBs. Others packed walking gear and will go hiking instead of skiing. frown

Christmas/New Year 2012/13 in Whistler was the BEST snow I've ever seen and skied on. I hope those in N.America/Canada have similar this year. smile

Having checked the webcam in La Clusaz, there's a sprinkling there! Hope it's better for mid Feb!

Where are you, Liethen?

Forecast is starting to look better from Boxing day onwards. For a few days at least. Probably not enough to open everything everywhere, but a much needed refresher.

Yes, I am keeping everything crossed it gets colder for a while and some snow appears.

I have plan B lined up for Val Thorens for 3rd Jan, which I have until Xmas day to cancel my current place in Les Gets and get at least a bit of money back on the accommodation. I don't really want to do this as it will add a fair bit of cost and complication. It is looking good up there though!

Encouragingly, even though the resort was officially closed this week, Les Gets (photos on their facebook page) had a couple of lifts going and a stretch of snow where they had got the ESF debutante area set up. So with blue sky, snow on the mountain and snow blowers going, and people sliding around, it almost looked normal, though the pics were very close cropped, and the webcams tell a different story!

I'm more than happy to accept a duff ski trip now and then as I have had some great times over the years, but more than anything I wanted my 3&4 yr olds to get on skis, so the fact that anything else aside I can still get the kids into their booked ski school, in all this was good to see.

Tie this with the forecasts that are showing cold and snow on the way, I feel a bit better now.

Looks like they have the Croix chair open which will give one slope. This will be great for the youngsters if it is a first time for them. The 'Magic Carpet' is also open, so if it is their first time they wont need anything more than that.
If temps come down then they can keep these topped up with the blowers, so all is not lost for you.
I have an 8 year old who should be doing race training, a bit more of a problem!

Still plenty of people flew on last Sat for a week on the snow - if they are lucky they will get 1 days skiing in though it will be rammed for that time.

I tend to book my skiing up much closer to when I intend to fly out /within a month but wouldn't ever go Dec/early Jan to Europe too risky for such an expensive holiday.

Les Gets is doing everything it can to get areas open for beginners, with the Piou Piou kinder garden open.

Got back from Tignes late last night, if you are used to Scottish snow, then it's in good shape. However poor by Tignes standards I suspect. Had a couple of runs with excellent snow, most are ok and a few are pretty horrid. Some have grass showing.... Nothing much at 1800, ok at 2100. Glad I was on rental skis.

Rumours at the hotel were saying that they were stopping the buses from other resorts as much as possible in order to preserve the snow. Don't know how true that rumour is.
