The French System even for French Residents with their Carte Vitale is that you pay at point of delivery and then reclaim from the state what you can and from your health insurer for the rest (if you have it)
Are you talking about treatment or care related to skiing specifically, or for any circumstance?
We returned last night from an epic week in Morzine.
However, during the journey down, my daughter suffered a severe reaction to a what we think was a nut paste in a cake.
The upshot was that she spent the night in hospital in Beaune. All fine in the morning after various IV treatment.
All I did was give them her EHIC card. No money changed hands, no bill, no insurance details passed over. Arrived home last night to a letter from the hospital, confirming nothing to pay and hope she is ok.
Wonderful treatment, care and service.
In my experience of Living and working in the Alps everything from normal trips to the GPs out of season to being airlifted off the mountain.

Possibly different in lesser tourist areas such as Beaune.

yes with two experiences of needing in resort medical attention, we had to pay on both occasions and claim back. The EHIC card was noted and recorded, but it didn't make any difference to the payment.

Not sure about France but I'm pretty sure Austrian towns have private and public hospitals ... one which of course accepts the card and t'other which makes you pay up front. Although unless you know which hospital is which, its not entirely obvious!

My experience in Switzerland last year was that I had to give the hospital a CHF 200 deposit which was subsequently refunded. I also had to be transferred by Ambulance from the local medical centre to the hospital which I subsequently got a billl of CHF 850 for....that was paid for by my medical insurance so the inference would be that is not covered by EHIC.

Not sure about recovery off the mountain as I skied down (dislocated shoulder)....I do know that when you by a ski pass you can have it with or without insurance to cover recovery in case of accident. The implication would be that it is not covered by EHIC.

I think you're heading for great conditions - where do you stay there?

I have my own chalet on the Route des Chavannes, it means that I can do 5 weeks a year all paid for by my guests.
This week my rentals asked if I wanted to come too, I've known them for years so it will be very relaxed! So I get paid to ski!

I've arrived in Andorra today - my word it's been snowing. The final pass into Pas de la Casa was closed so we had a long detour through Spain.

Somewhat ironically we were stopped by the police in Andorra la Vella who were checking cars were equipped with chains, snow tyres (we were, Audi AWD with winters), just as the copper is looking at the tyres there was a god almighty bang and some idiot Spaniard on summer tyres smashed into the back of us. What a fking bellend. Car (not mine) is a bit worse for wear but still works and the boot closes. Rest of the drive was nuts - never been in a car in so much snow.

My "holiday" is a total write-off; because the OH has taken a new job with lots more money but lots less holidays we could only manage three days skiing. Yesterday was lost because of trying to get here in the snow, and today there are no lifts open; same predicted for tomorrow. There is *tons* of lovely fresh snow too. What a sickener.

Total waste of time, money and the OHs scarce holidays.

I have had the same happen to me, I know how you feel. Drove into Tignes Les Brev a few years back in the early hours of the morning. Light snow on the way up from Bourg. We parked up at around 3am, on the street as we didn't know where the car parks were. I got up early in the morning, as I know they don't like you parking on the street there, and the car was gone. We had had some absurd amount of snow overnight. I assumed that the plough guys had dragged/pushed the car away. However, eventually we discovered that the car was in fact where we had left it but under about 4ft of snow; I have pictures somewhere. Spent the morning digging it out, and the rest of a long weekend eating and drinking frown In the end the only lift opened all weekend was the little free chair in le Lac opposite the Loop, and that was hardly worth booting up for.

Anyway, having had two trips this year so far and a third already booked, I've just been offered a 4-dayer to Chatel next month. Should be able to get high enough to find whatever snow is left.
