Phoenix v Boston
Discussion
Just one night, Boston, unless you want to sit in the sun by the pool, then Phoenix
What do you like to see and do you have transport? If its just to see the/a city then Boston hands down, i have never felt the need to spend time in Phoenix beyond catching the plane or getting the car, but there is spectacular scenery not very far away.
Boston on the other hand has lots of city touristy things to do, all within walking or bus tour distance away

Of course another way of looking at it is if you are spending the week/few days in Boston anyway you may be able to get Boston done in the evenings/down time, whereas a free day with a car in phoenix, with a bit of effort you could get a whistle stop tour of the grand canyon (7.5 hours RT without stops), or slightly less effort, sedona. But then the same applies to Boston with getting up into the countryside, Salem or cape cod.
I was in Boston a few months ago with work and to be honest it was never on my list do places to visit but I have admit it was a really nice place, think a clean smaller version of New York. Down around by the cheers bar is particularly nice to walk around and good places to eat, I definitely could have spent a few more days there if I had of had the time.
