Hire a bike and ride across the Golden Gate. Turn left up into the hills, you'll see plenty of wildlife then downhill all the way into Sausolito. Have a snack on the waterfront and bring your bike back on the ferry. That'd make a lovely trip.

Alternatively a bus tour,it goes around all the sights to see and stops at each of them. The ticket lasts for the day, you get off wherever you like for a look round then hop on the next one that comes by. I thought it was great and pleased I'd seen most of what there is to see in a day.

Unless you've already got tickets for Alcatraz, forget it. Sells out months in advance.
USS Pampanito (next to Pier39) is worth an hour or so.
They don't.

I've walked up to a booth in the AM and bought tickets for a PM same day tour on at least 2 occasions before.
That's pretty good considering (genuine) tickets are only available through the NPS website.

Are you saying these tickets are fake and will not gain you access to Alcatraz then?
No, that's not what I'm saying, because www.alcatrazcruises.com is the NPS website for Alcatraz.
Fair point on the night tour vs day tour thing though. My mistake.
Still worth booking in advance though, even for day trips.

Rent a bike around fishermans wharf and ride all the way to (and over) the golden gate. It's fantastic.

San Fran was my favourite place in California. Brilliant city.

FYI when I was there a month ago, next available tickets for Alcatraz were a month in the future. Definitely book if you can.

Reviving this as I'm headed back in November. Just wandering if anyone has any other tips, I'll be there for a couple of weekends on my own.

Was wondering if anyone can recommend any good (friendly to tourist?) bars/music venues for Saturday nights? I like blues music so was thinking of finding somewhere along those lines. The Saloon looks good.

I may rent a car on one of the weekends, was thinking of getting a Mustang and hooning down the coast but not sure.

Pretty sure when I was there last I climbed up the tallest building (Transamerica Tower?) and found a parachute at the top. It was a great jump with great views, although I did land on a police car and ended up with a *** wanted level after I shot the cops inside as they got antsy.

That might've been San Fierro though...

I'm bumping this as I'll be over there for a wedding, mid November. I'll have 36 hours in San Francisco before I head into Nevada.

I've been to SF a couple of times. It's one of my favourite cities. But, you lot usually come up with something interesting and offbeat to do whenever I enquire. smile

I had a few spare hours on the Sunday before my flight when I was last over,
Dove down Pacific Highway to SantaCruz, it's a stunning drive.
I did this, stopped in Half Moon Bay to see Mavericks which dissapointingly was flat. Santa Cruz is pretty cool.

Thanks all for the tips. The day I had in SF was when Fleet Week was on so the place was RAMMED beyond belief. I did make a reservation for a bike tour but they never 'received my email' and by the time I got there, they were fully booked. I was just getting over a vomiting bug though from the previous week so it was probably just as well.

The rocketboat was out of service but I did manage to do the hour cruise out to the Golden Gate bridge and around Alcatraz. The US Navy Blue Angels and a P-51 Mustang formation team were doing overhead displays and I probably had one of the best views throughout. The weather was fantastic as well. I didn't make it to the Tram museum but I did get to go on one from Fisherman's wharf up to one of the Bart stations. Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 were tourist traps as warned so I didn't spend much time there.

Whilst out there on my work trip, I did manage to get to visit the Intel museum (free, worth a visit if you're into IT - if you're not, it will be your worst nightmare), Apple's HQ (and more importantly, the company store where you can buy loads of gizzits such as mugs etc), Stanford University campus (very nice and the shopping mall there is decent - especially the staff in Victoria's Secret biggrin ) and the SF 49er's new stadium in Santa Clara (very impressive but tiny capacity of around 69,000).
