To be honest, Times Square had me thinking I was damned glad I booked a hotel else where. It is a pit.

Try Airbnb for cheap!
It seems the city is actively trying to stop airbnb rentals in NYC, so any that are on there are likely to be less than legit.

If I were you I'd stay in manhattan. Why waste time travelling in and out of the city?

I've just checked the midtown club quarters hotel on expedia. It's ideally located just off 5th avenue and it's just over £400 for 3 nights in early december. Rooms are a bit bigger than NY average.

The Hudson hotel is also about £400. That's close to the park (no view) but it does have a trendy pub and a wine bar (not cheap) which is handy. The cheapest rooms are really small though.

Do book as early as possible, NY fills up quickly in December.

A view of the park is nice, but days are short at that time of year so you probably won't get to see it much as you'll be out and about.

OP IME so long as you're on the Island of Manhattan location isn't overly important. You can of course stay out in one of the boroughs but it will take up time going back and forward. The subway is your friend, and remember as a working city there's no such thing as a central location.

People seem to gravitate towards Times Square maybe due to the above? It's not a bad location IF you plan to see a few shows etc. What used to be known as the Hells Kitchen area is close to TS but offers a neighbourhood feel, I quite liked it there stayed at a place called the Belvedere was inexpensive and a nice room plenty of nice restaurants around and it's walking distance to the Intrepid-def worth making time for. Also stated at a place called the Affinia Dumont, really good views of the NYC skyline and the Chrysler building, close to the ESB. Also stayed at a place called Hotel Giraffe and a place up town which is escaping me....... Surprised at the flight prices it's been 2 years sice I last went but on several trips paid between £300 and £400 (closer to 3) Made it easier when BA flew direct for Manchester-Continental we've flew with the last couple of times, however living in the arse end of nowhere has the advantage that we're equally far away from quite a few airports

You say you're not after fine dining but one tip is to try some of the high(er) end places for lunch, same quality food for a much lower price

Thanks for all the helpful advice, plan from this is:

Stay Manhattan (prob close to soho)
First week in December so we can see Xmas decorations
Delis/burger/steak houses & places in little Italy (will leave the fine dining to occasional trips to London/bucks)
Shopping

Just need few sight seeing places, definitely want to have a cocktail at top of the Rockefeller Centre
Will need to research others..

My family went in August on the way back from a business trip to Chicago.

£1200 did us 6 nights at the Waldorf, much better than Trip Advisor suggests.

Did all the bucket list stuff using a NYC explorer pass. I rated top of the rock as a better experience than the Empire State.

Some stuff is great that's free...... grand Central is fantastic, head down below to the food court and go to Juniors, great burgers and homemade cheesecake.

Bryant Park a bit of solace from the hubbub in mid town

Book Crown tickets for Liberty Island 3-4 months ahead, the have a daily limit of 300 tickets

We also did Broadway on a budget, got good seats at Matilda for £35 a head.

For a good steak dinner head to Bobby Vans Grill on 50th St.

Waldorf looking like £1350 for 3 nights beginning on December (basic room)
£1200 for 6 nts was a bargain!

Unless you're really loaded and money really isn't an issue why bother paying for a hotel that is anything other than clean and comfortable. New York is an amazing city, surely its better to use some of that money to see and do things. Hotels are just for sleeping in, who goes to New York to spent time in their hotel room?

Absolutely this - when there for pleasure, we normally stay at the Holiday Inn on Lafayette - in between Little Italy and Soho. Perfectly adequate. Like he says, you don't go to NYC to stay in your room.

For business I always stay at the Hyatt on the Hudson, which as the name suggests is right on the Hudson, directly opposite the Freedom Tower/1 WTC. Fabulous views of lower Manhattan from there, and it's right next to the Path station on Exchange Place - under the Hudson and one stop to WTC.

Not stayed there myself but the Holiday Inn on Lafayette looks a great deal and is in a brilliant location.

Good man! Will definitely go on my list

So far it looks like only one place to visit other than shops (Rockefeller centre)

No, Grand Central is awe inspiring and worth an hour of your time, the Chrysler building is accross the road from there too.

It would also be worth looking at what shows are on, on Broadway. Tickets can be got cheaply, plus it's a bucket list must do....

Never got round to trying them last time I was there, but the queues were massive so they must be good.

When I lived in Manhattan I found this website really useful... www.GoldStar.com Top of The Rock is good (better than Empire State), try and book in advance as the lines get quite long. Wolfgang Puck's restaurant on Park Avenue would be my recommendation for a sublime steak and Hotel Giraffe for a smaller, central, comfortable hotel. Definitely don't stay off Manhattan, just not worth it for the time you're there. If you are there to celebrate anything go for the tasting menu at Mandarin Oriental over looking Central Park, very special. Lastly - wear comfy shoes, you'll walk miles without even realising.

ETA - Last time I stayed it was in the Duane Street hotel, I'd been concerned as it was a last minute 4th July (so no other availability!) booking, but in fairness to them it was good - especially for the lower Manhattan/Chealsea areas.

I"m going to New York for a week in mid-October and am staying at this place....

http://www.thejanenyc.com

Looks pretty quirky but cool, and doesn't really come with any fancy mod cons which is fine as I'm out and about all day. Total cost for 7 nights comes to around £590 which isn't too bad.
