Stay in the city centre. Go to the Northern Quarter (and Red's True Barbecue). Get drunk. Rejoice in the eclectic mix of excellent drinking and eating establishments. Forget all about your lack of judgement in booking that hotel in Ashton.

Definitely stay in city centre! There's no nice way to put this but Ashton is a dive.

On the plus side you can get the tram from Picadilly to Ashton if you're concerned about traffic. That side of town isn't too bad though - or at least it never used to be.

As suggested, hit the Northern Quarter but forget Reds and go to Almost Famous Burger (there are two - one near Deansgate and one in NQ). I'm sat here actually drooling at just the thought of it.

Other decent places to visit are Cain and Grain (ribs), Lust Luck Liqour and Burn, Kosmonaut (for drinks), Blu Bar...the list goes on.

I stay in Manchester every week for work and have done for 18 months. I am working my around the hotels and restaurants

my preferred hotels are Malmaison and The Midland. The Midland sometimes has really good deals on Hotels.com.

Standard rooms in the Mal are quite tight and the beds can be rock hard (pot luck) butthey are softer in the exec rooms. Lowry is too far from trams etc for me.

Avoid the Hilton in the Beetham Tower, the restaurant is dire.

For food, try Bar and Grill or Sams Chophouse.

I'd add that the Radisson Edwardian is probably one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in - although can be dear.

Yes I meant to add that to the list. Its next door to the Midland

I also meant to add avoid the Velvet Hotel unless you are gay! Nice rooms but blokes snogging at one table in the restaurant and a "woman" with 5 oclock shadow at another table put me off my dinner. Glad I didnt order sausage!

Only place I remember staying in, all the rest were bland, was the V&A. I recall it being quite nice.

I've booked into The Village hotel in Ashton. biggrin
Oh. Good Luck!
Oh bloody hell. Is it really that bad, honestly? frown

If it is then I'll change it.
It's okay. I live near there and used to be a member of their gym. I've stayed there when my mate got married and the rooms are pretty good. The location is a bit crap (it's on a retail park) but there is a Metrolink station in walking distance if you want to head into town. Don't go into Ashton though - it's an armpit.

Only stayed at the Village once, because we have an office nearby. I wouldn't do it again. Village hotels are basically Travel Lodges with a pool.

The location is extremely uninspiring!

Nothing around the Village of any interest to venture out, Ashton has the personality of a tramps undercrackers, I am sue Mos Eisley was created on the back of Ashton.

City centre hotels, many many to choose from as the posts show, and there are plenty of transport links from the City to StalyVegas, plus your dining options are endless in the City, something there for every palate.

When I stayed at the Village in Ashton, I googled things to do in Ashton and the first hit was a massage parlour!

I think the Travelodge comparison is a bit unfair. Travelodges are as basic as they get and don't even give you shampoo in your room. A lot of them don't even have a proper bar/restaurant. When I stayed in the Village Ashton Moss, my room was pleasant, the bed was comfortable, there was a large telly and iPod docking station and the shower was very good.

There is a bar in there which is popular with non-residents and there are some good bar meals on the menu. There is a separate restaurant if you prefer - I haven't eaten in there but others I know say it is okay. The only thing I would point out is the bar prices are a bit dear.

The pool is part of a gym complex, with the usual fitness suite, weight room and studios. There is a hot tub, sauna and steam room.

The OP asked for a hotel that wasn't a dive but didn't have to be posh and I think the Village fits that description. The only issue is the location. If you only really want to get out of the hotel, there is a Harvester pub next door, or The Sheldon Arms up the road. There is a Frankie and Benny's and a Nando's too if you are happy with that, but if you want something different you do have to travel further out. There is an all you can eat Chinese on the site - avoid it - the food is vile and it is full of chavs. If you like a curry, there are two excellent restaurant's in Audenshaw, which is five minutes in a taxi. The Indian Plaza and the Pearl are both worth visiting. Manchester is about 20 minutes on a tram or in a taxi. As I said, Ashton is an armpit, but if you do go want a pub that is closer, The Caledonia Hotel on Warrington Street is okay and is about 15 minutes walk from the hotel - my uncle used to be the landlord.

Stalybridge ?

Easy, stay in or around Picadilly ( I tend to use the Hilton), and take the train there and back each day.

Ding Ding! Good advice. I live in Manchester and this is spot on. Traffic in the centre is nothing to worry about. I assume your flying in to MAN?

Thanks for the heads up. smile

Yep, flying into Manchester.

It's now looking like I'm going to be very busy whilst I'm there so I'll only be using the Hotel as a place to eat and sleep, no visits to pubs etc.
