Hi All,

I need ideas for a gift for my wife's 40th birthday.

Please recommend me a spa-hotel break (towards the end of December)

I'm struggling with ideas?

Just been to Sopwell house in St Albans with some friends and we loved it.

Seen some mixed reviews on Trip advisor but we found it to be lovely and the Lazy Sunday deal was really good value (the food was excellent)

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary, excellent place. You will get first rate service from very professional staff, two lovely restaurants with great food.Spa,pool, steam room, massage the works.Shame you wont be able to have lunch outside overlooking the bay at this time of the year.
Mind you it is rather expensive? but the lady will love it.

One of the negative T/A reviews is mine - shocking Friday / Saturday 'deal' we were given as an anniversary present. Crazy small room, treatments okish, pool was so humid you could hardly breathe and was rammed (then again it seemed a lot of beds were reserved by dreaded towels, which staff were apparently powerless to remove) and the dinner was one of the worst experiences I have had in many years - as mentioned to the manager at the time, I have had less rushed and more relaxing meals at McDonalds with my two little ones!
I appreciate the Sunday deal will be less busy but the cost of our experience was over £350 - not worth it!

How weird, mine was almost the complete opposite. Rooms were fine, had better but certainly had worse, the treatments were ok, the pool was fabulous and only two other people in the pool area at the time (and they left - fled?- once four of us decided to do a improvised synchonised swimming routine). And the dining was magnificent, service was excellent and the food for dinner, breakfast and lunch were superb. Particularly the lunch. However they did get a new chef two weeks previously and the staff were saying he had transformed the food side of the business. And he was very pleasant to chat to. In fact we had lovely staff all round. How odd to have such a difference in experience.

Babington House near Frome, Somerset. By far the best hotel I've stayed at in the UK. The spa is called the Cowshed and their website is:

Did you go for the standard double? Or a suite?

I'd be interested as I'm looking for a two night break in December for my girlfriends birthday.

Thanks.
