If you buy a Network Railcard (£30/yr), all four of you can travel for £119 return (assuming you are travelling Saturday morning & returning Sunday evening).
We'll look into this as yes, we are travelling up Sat AM & back on Sun eve - many thanks for all the great info smile
This! We regularly travel from Bristol to London for 2 day breaks (weekdays & weekends) and always travel by train. It works out a little more expensive than driving, but it makes a change and means that I don't have to worry about directions in London or parking.

We always stay in a Premier Inn (or similar), as they tend to offer family rooms at sensible rates.

The museums are always good value for money (i.e. free!), but we've taken to doing other things now that we've been so often.

Last year, we downloaded a Harry Potter themed walk from the 'net which gave us an interesting walk along roads and alleys that tourists don't normally use. it was a good way of finding the 'hidden' London, and it's amazing what quiet gardens and corners you can find in central London.

Any recomendations for Premier Inns etc? If we train it we'll end up at Waterloo.

Southwark - Tate Modern Premier Inn.
Stayed there a few weeks ago with my wife & 2 children. One of their newer hotels, clean, modern - great breakfasts - a very short walk from Southwark Tube on the Jubilee line, easily and quickly reached from Waterloo.

The one at County Hall is ok, and pretty good location-wise. If you get an inward facing room the view is ste (just the back of the opposing wing of the building) but it's nice and quiet.

Sadly no availability on that one, any other ideas as my OH is looking at one costing nearly £300pn! Next closest PI is Angel Islington - any good?
