A few years ago we stayed at the Plaza Athenee. It was excellent in all respects. On one stay they upgraded us to their best suite. Floor area was bigger than my 4 bed, 4 recep house

We stayed at the Banyan Tree earlier this year. Rather nice, and a short walk from the night-markets. Got some great views from the top too.

ETA - you have to be lucky with their offers though to fit your budget.

Stayed at the Banyan tree this time last year, thoroughly enjoyed the stay and the rooftop restaurant.
Also stayed in the Hilton on the other side of the river, great views from pool and 360 bar.

Wouldn't bother eating in the Hilton though, the street food down the dark alley next to the hotel was 10X better and the atmosphere was brilliant.

Would recommend both.

The Bangkok hotel market is probably the best in the world, it's just a fact that you'll find better than the Lebua. i.e For the same price you'll find a newer, better hotel.

e.g. The Lebua is £88 next weekend - you can get cheaper rooms in Chatrium Riverside, Sofitel So, Sofitel Sukhumwit, both Anantara's, Mode Sathorn, Renaissance - all newer and nicer. That's not even mentioning the older 5 stars which are £20 cheaper like the Sheraton, Hilton, Marriot etc and IMO better than Lebua.

Which is why it depends on what the OP is after. For me newer doesn't equal better. It is the only big hotel I will stay in Thailand as I found any bothers very snotty and unwelcoming so now I tend to use b&bs, however I could not stay in Bangkok wit out some luxury to escape the mayhem from. For me lebua is exactly what I'm after, big room, great staff and that stunning view which out weighs any fancy decor you might get in a newer hotel.
