I'm new to this site, and was thinking about doing a tobacco run in the next week to Belgium and back, I've read loads about it online buts its all from the past, I want to know if two people in a car can bring back £250 each of tobacco which is around 50 pouches of 50g EACH? it is for personal use we do not in any intend to sell so if keep hold of the recites and just be honest will it be ok? can anyone help please ?????????????

I've done it but £250 seems a bit low to make it worthwhile.

You can bring back as much as you want but customs can also investigate if they think it's not for personal use. Best advice is have any tobacco in plain view on the seats , if they ask why you are driving to Belgium then tell them the truth. People think they need to lie which is what gives customs good reason to seize stuff, tell them the truth and there is nothing they can do about it.

Is Belgium currently the cheapest EU country then?

Was thinking of having a long weekend somewhere myself.

I'm sure Poland is vastly cheaper - if you can be arsed to drive across Germany

I'll have a look, must be a resource somewhere online. Flying might be the way to go then.

I go two or three times a year.

Eurotunnel then straight up the coast road to Adinkerke is about 45 minutes.

Always bring back enough to last me until my next trip.

Exactly the same here. Usually pop to Ypres or depanne for lunch when there.
The 20 pouches per person is simply a guideline nothing else, although they try and make you think that is the absolute limit and that is that. You can bring back whatever you like , one of the benefits of being in the EU. Just be honest and you have nothing to worry about. Don't try and hide the tobacco or anything dull like that as it makes you look dodgy straight away.

Also, don't forget you have to pay in (Sterling) cash to get the best price as they aren't meant to discount the list price but can offer a favourable £/€ exchange rate for cash.

I'm going in a few days time. Hoping to pick a few bottles of wine up for Christmas from France and some tobacco from Belgium.

As an example. Golden Virginia 50g is just under £18 here. Currently £5.60 in Belgium.

I took the wife and sprog over to France for a few days in July, whilst on a visit to the home country, and was a bit shocked to see they don't sell duty free ciggies in the duty free stores in Calais. They told us we need to go to Belgium for that. How odd, thought I. confused

Jesus Hadn't realised it was that cheap over there I'm only living near Ashford at the moment, it nearly seems cheap enough to go get one pouch. Definitely worth it for 20 pouches.

  • Slight exaggeration, I know.

Russ,
You ought to.

I live on the outskirts of Maidstone.

I can do a round trip, using the tunnel, of six hours. Midweek day return can be had for around £55.

No, they don't pull every car. You could have 100 pouches each , however if they don't believe that it is actually for your own use then they will take it, if you are a heavy smoker though, you should be alright.

Just returned today.
Went on the overnight ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge.
Got stopped by security on the way out from Hull and also at Zeebrugge. Couple of questions, quick glance in the boot, rummage through the back of the car and an inspection of the engine bay.
£350 worth of baccy and cigs and some booze. Probably need to do £500 to make it worthwhile, but as a first trip, went very well.
