SO any highlights or things to avoid? Bearing in mind I'm not into pub culture!! Going as a group of 4 on a long weekend break - 2 of us like snapping (photos) whereas the others are Antipodean and like drinking frown

Also just rang a hotel to un-cancel 2 rooms that I cancelled last night (but didn't get a confirmation of cancellation so assumed it was still on!). They tell my fellow Antipodean that 'it's all booked up' and they would have to stay at a more expensive sister hotel. I ring up and do my 'business traveller thing' (i.e. many years experience in getting ripped of) and amazingly the rooms are all available. Now i'm not stereotyping but ..

^^^^ TOP TIP!
Even the local taxi drivers won't take visitors there any longer as it's,
a) a rip off
b) full of beggars

I was taken on a business dinner to http://www.thepigsear.com/ = highly recommended!

6 of us went nearly 5 years ago, it's bloody cold & even more bloody expensive!

We did most of the obvious touristy things over the weekend, Guinness factory, open top bus tour etc. Never did the Jamiesons distillery though frown

One of the most expensive cities I have ever visited, and not worth the mark up in my opinion.

Well at least i'll appreciate London even more when I get back. I won't be doing another 'Euro' holiday for ages so this will at least fill that gap. Re: Temple Bar - will give it a wide berth!

the very best overall advice is just don't go at all

how about Venice, Chiang mai, San Francisco, Barcleona, Prague, Berlin, Siem Reap, Santa Fe, Rome, Vienna, Paris, Chicago instead ?

This, wasn't that interesting when I went a few years back, and really is seriously expensive. There are so many nicer, cheaper and more interesting cities to visit in Europe.

But if you really must go then take money, lots of money. And a waterproof coat.

Guinness factory and Jameson's tour are worth a laugh , you'll get some good pics from the Guinness tower , the zoo is quite good if you get really bored and there's plenty of historical tat if that floats your boat .
No Dublin visit is complete without buying the worlds most expensive pint in temple bar , I don't know why no one likes that area
Tell your mates to only buy pints , halfs cost almost the same , not that I imagine they would entertain a half .

I wouldn't say not to go at all. I've lived in Dublin and its a great place, not London/New York great but a really friendly city - makes you realise how grumpy everyone in the UK, well London, seems to be.

Like anywhere there are tourist traps that are best avoided, Temple bar is a hole. Walk through it in the day if you really must, its full of UK stag/hen parties at night and I had my wallet lost/stole there at one point.

If you have a chance get out into the hills that surround the city to the West, you'll get amazing views for your pictures, there is also the highest bar in Dublin up there too but I cant remember the name, great food up there though.

I'm not going to argue about how much it costs, I've been fortunate that the last couple of times I've been back its been on the company tab, altho I would still see that a taxi is cheaper than a London black cab, we all know that is not difficult though.

The day we got to Dublin it was bright & sunny, our Guinness tour was the following day & we were promised the best views of Dublin from the top. Well' it was thick fog on the day & we couldn't see a bloody thing! Another (complimentary wink ) pint of Guinness it is then drink
