I'm planning a trip to Australia at the moment and I can go via Hong Kong using my air miles, however I'm not sure of the situation there. Are the protests quite widespread still? Are they a reason to not go or are they quite contained still?

I'm looking to go in Feb

I'm booking tomorrow to take my family in April. The protests were mostly in Central. Friends living and working in HK say it's back to normal (chaos). If you're on a stopover trip, you can always stay in Kowloon .... I have to go to Central for work when I'm there and will in this next trip too.

The protests are nothing at all to worry about, blown all out of proportion by the media.

The only possible issue you'll encounter would be that some buses are affected by closed roads.

As a tourist, you probably won't even see anything unless you go looking for it, in which case you might see a couple of tents where they're camping out.

There's more than a couple of tents. Just got back today after a week there and they have closed Nathan Road for about 3/4 of a mile as the protesters have set up camp on the main road. It reminded me of tent city at St Paul's in London a couple of years ago but as mentioned they seemed harmless enough. I didn't see any trouble even though there was a large police presence, in fact there were lots of people just taking photos of them and the site. It does not seem to have impacted the locals as it was absolutely rammed with people as usual on the metro and surrounding area.

Iam there for just two nights in four weeks time, on route to NZ . My agent says there is no problem. As for air miles , I have to book way more ahead than you are planning, how you doing it ?

It's not until Feb, so there is a decent range of options. It's en-route to Aus, but having looked around at my options, I might now be going via Tokyo and home through Singapore.

We may be taking a trip to NZ via Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific in Feb too. Would like to stop over in HK for 3/4 nights but have never been there as we've always gone via Singapore or Dubai before. Looking for recommendations for a decent 4/5 star hotel but have no idea of the layout of HK or where the best place would be to stay in order to pack in lots of touristy things in 2 to 3 days. Any advice would be welcome and help with decisions.

The last time we went we booked through Trailfinders who booked us on Emirates at a very good price but we had to travel from France to London first but this time we are looking to book direct with CP and go from Paris which is far easier for us, not using a travel agent would mean booking direct with a hotel or maybe through one of the hotel booking services , again any recommendations would be welcome.

I work out in Asia & have/do spend a lot of time in HKG

As for the protests, it's nothing to concern a tourist with unless you plan to sight see in Admiralty (which I doubt) or go looking for it in Mong Kok which you may see if your visiting ladies Matket.

If you want to do tourist things, look for a hotel located around with Nathan Road, Kowloon or mid levels in Central both access via the MTR and the latter by the airport express
But if your on a budget any hotel in Kowloon will do as the MTR network is both cheap and extensive

If you have a '3' UK mobile contract you can use all your data/mins/texts at no extra cost in HKG too as its part of their 'feel at home' package

If you have the option, go via Tokyo and HKG instead of Singapore. I went to all 3 last year and loved Tokyo and HKG. Wasn't so fussed about Singapore though!

Was in HK enroute to Ozz at the end of the 1st week of the protests, walked around/through them all very peaceful, nothing like the media had reported, protesters were glad to see tourists taking an interest.

Oddly enough, that's the decision that was made last night. I've been to both before (not for a long time to Singapore) but the people I'm travelling home with haven't been before, so HKG it is.

you won't even notice it unless you go to admiralty in front of legco building.
and even if you go there there's nothing to be scared about.

I've stayed here www.harbour-plaza.com/kowloon/Index-en.htm a couple of times, fantastic location with a Metro entrance in front of the hotel with a short walk underground to the station itself, a 2 minute walk to the waterfront and no more than 10min to the TST Star Ferry. Very small (clean) rooms and the chances are you won't have any kind of view, I'd stay there again though. I'd echo the previous comments about hotel locations, wherever you are though getting around HK is easy and fun, the Star Ferries and the trams on HK island are my favourite forms of transport anywhere and you'll see a lot if you walk as well. The ferries and Metro services stop around midnight so if you're out late and need to get back to the other side of the harbour you'll need to get a cab and use one of the tunnels, easy enough though.

Iam flying Cathay to Hong kong onto nz and did much research into hotels, decided mandarin in the end. Also booked the limo collection from the airport, 90 quid. Not cheap but through Amex I get 300 US dollar credit against food and beverage over the two nights. But will go to the ritz Carlton for drinks at least once!
