Mrs Puggit and I are off for a long weekend in Gibraltar on Friday to celebrate our 10th anniversary redface

Any tips on what are the must dos and where to eat? We have a table booked in Gatsbys on Friday night already smile

We arrive at 2pm on Friday and leave on Sunday afternoon, so only one full day!

That's plenty of time for Gib

Cable car up the rock

Be intimidated by monkeys

Tour the caves in the rock

Purchase very cheap alcohol, tobacco and electronics (beware of fake everything)

Drink in an English bar in Spain

Gib done

Gatsby = decent food, lots of it, but not very atmospheric.

In Irish Town Cafe Rojo or Gallo Nero are good. For excellent seafood head over the border to Tomilleros on the Atunara or try the tapas bars in La Linea e.g. Alfredos.

Apart from Monkeys, Main Street and St Michael's Cave...
If you like walking head up the back of the Rock (Mediterranean Steps) then come down via Charles V walk.
If it's wet the Gibraltar museum is worth visiting or the 2nd world war tunnels.
If it's warm you can do a dolphin watching tour, go to the Alameda Gardens etc.

A bit late now, but if I were you I wouldn't go to Gibraltar.
It's like they took Luton and put it on a rock near Spain.... with queues to get on it.

I quite liked Gibraltar after a visit I made there a few months ago smile

From a combination of watching that crap 'Gibraltar- Britain in the sun' series and the things my ex-Navy mate told me, I had assumed it was a really tiny place which was quite run down and full of weirdos and drunk Royal Navy employees, combined with a bunch of overly 'British' pubs and cafés.

The reality is that it appears to be a place that large sums of money are being pored into as we speak in the form of the fancy new Airport, hospital, marina, and lots of quite attractive looking houses and apartment blocks.

It was also larger than I imagined.

It's kind of becoming an attractive tax haven type place rather than essentially a Navy Dockyard littered with sailors accommodation.

Yes, it still has quite a few crappy 'old school' British pubs and restaurants, and loads of bad shops, but I think the tide is turning.

That's a fair summary Ninja. It's changed enormously in the last 10-20 years.

Yeah, I mean it isn't Monaco just yet, but it's pretty clear that it is heading in that direction.

It's becoming less and less just a grotty old barracks for drunk sailors and more a tax haven for people with a bit of cash.

I think I'll do a little report!

'Enjoyed' 2 loops around the Rock on our arrival - winds were all over the shop and so we diverted to Malaga. I've encountered go arounds before, but our first attempt was really quite frightening. BA had the coaches ready to leave within an our of landing at Malaga, with free water for everyone. No queue to get in, we were treated as an arriving aircraft and asked to go through passport control in the airport and wait for our luggage to come off the conveyor!

First night we went to Gatsbys. When we arrived before 8pm it was devoid of atmosphere, but Vijay the owner made us at home - in fact he checked up on us many times, and upon finding out it was our anniversary gave me a hug and a kiss! Huge thunderstorm on Friday night/Sat morning.

We stayed at the O'Callaghan Elliot. Big hotel near the main street. Little to recommend it for, and the breakfast was worth avoiding (in fact we had it refunded!).

First day we visited the Botanic Gardens, the little wildlife park within it, then walked past the posh flats and marina. Decide to return to The Lounge for dinner - this was a good shout! Returned to the main street and shopped for the rest of the day. 1L of Bombay Sapphire at £8.45 was quite an eye opener. Apparently all the UK brand shops (Next, BHS etc) are franchises owned by a couple of rich Gibraltar families.

Today we started with breakfast outside at Jury's and then caught a guided taxi ride up the rock, visiting the cave of St Michael, near the top and the Great Siege caves. Lunch in Casemates Sq, and then off to the airport. The new terminal gives an amazing view of the runway - would love to have been on the verandah to watch our aborted landings.

Overall you could feel the presence of the rich, and the UK in the sun brigade. I hope neither win!

I go there a lot with work (gaming industry - a lot of the money you see in Gib is as a result of gaming) - I was there a couple of weeks ago, and was meant to be meeting a PHer, beanbag, but got caught up visiting friends too much in the last week.

All of the "it's just Croydon with sun" stuff is usually spouted by people who have no idea about the place or were once there 20 years ago. There's an awful lot of new stuff going up now, super-duper hospital (my mate has just won "Doctor of the Year" cool).

Flying direct to Gib in winter is a total lottery as to whether or not the plane will land - I was watching the Monarch flights come in two weeks ago. The Birmingham plane got in no problem; the Manchester plane (mine) was right behind it and couldn't land. Cue a long wait, trip to Malaga and getting home at 4am instead of home in time to go to the pub frown You're probably just as well going direct to Malaga to start with.

I remember reading that the Morrisons in Gib does more business than any of the UK ones. I think all the ex-pat Brits in Spain go there to stock up.

They do. It can get completely emptied sometimes.
