Most likely it will be above freezing and any of:
- blue skies and sunshine
- overcast
- light drizzle

Right now it is blue skies and sunshine.

This.
Start at London Bridge (boat from Canary Wharf pier or Jubilee Line)
And at this time of year, if you walk up the riverside walk up the Thames to the London Eye there's a German Christmas market on most of the way.
You can detour at the Tate Modern, cross over the footbridge and see St Paul's.
There's also the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Never been, so no idea if it's any good or not, but it looks nice on the website.

I wouldn't call it a lovely stroll near to Christmas if you went on a Saturday (or any Saturday come to think of it!), it gets absolutely heaving and not enjoyable. However nice midweek day is good followed by a stroll along the Southbank and Hays Galleria.

How about a trip to the Lego exhibition at The Old Truman Brewery not far from The Gherkin in Brick Lane http://artofthebrick.co.uk/tickets

Depending on exactly what you want to do at The Shard you may find it is already booked up. Check their website for reservations, but demand is high - especially around Christmas

Also a waste of money.

Just go up any one of the other tall buildings for a drink. Hell you can even go to the bar in Shard. Once you're above the 30th floor not much changes.

Do NOT go to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. Winter Wonderland my arse. Took the kids down there on Saturday thinking it would be nice and festive, spent an hour stuck in a 30 people wide queue as far as the eye can see just to get in, people pushing and shoving, jumping over my little boys pushchair and knocking it flying, just for a big funfair and a load of German market stalls that you couldn't get to because of the crowds. It was st. Granted, some of the rides were pretty impressive but a minimum £3 per person to go on anything, even the little kids rides. I would rather have my balls ripped off than go to that again. Should've known better really...

Personally I'd skip the Shard and also the river cruise.

The Shard's just frigging expensive and I've yet to meet anyone who would go again but are happy to repeat the wheel.
Unless you really need to have someone tell you that "This is Tower Bridge...", "That's the dome of St Pauls...", etc then skip the tourist boats and jump on one of the Thames Clipper boats. These are basically just river buses serving Westminster to Greenwich but offer the same views at a fraction of the price, just without the commentary.

Think the Ramada will be the one out by the airport, which is a bit of a wasteland - but the DLR service is good, reliable and keeps going till just after midnight.

As others have said Borough Market's nice for a wander (check out Neil's Yeard Dairy if you like cheese), as is Greenwhich.

If you're not scared of heights and want something different check out Up At The O2. Basically there's a rope bridge hung up and over the O2 (Dome).
