I travel quite a lot with Business, having been stuck many times due to bad weather, mechanical failure, natural disaster (volcanic ash), Industrial action.
I travel with the following items I consider as essentials.

o.pack of polos or other mints.
o.1x Pot Noodle & plastic fork (useful for a simple snack as long as you can get a pint of boiling water).
o.10400mAh Backup Battery (provides 4x full recharges to an iphone (or 2 full o.charges for my iphone and 2x charges for my Nexus-7)
o.Small Wifi Router / Personal Hotspot (Argos £39.99)
o.Gerber Multitool ( and Gerber "Shortcut" scissors )
o.Selection of cable ties
o.small AA sized CREE torch
o.International power adapter and dual USB output
o.micro USB stick with digital images of my passport, birth certificate, driving license, Home Address, CC & bank account numbers, Emergency contacts Plus images of any boarding passes or E-Tickets for whatever journey im taking

  • Before anyone picks me up on the fact I have CC and Bank details together with personal data, I use the Kingston "dataSecure" application to ensure the data is encrypted **
I also carry a laminated A5 card with emergency contacts / address information with me.

This is a list I shall be emulating

Just got my Skross travel adapter Xmas present, impressive piece of plastic. Also my thin fibre quick drying towel which prove useful if you're staying in cheap places which don't supply you with a towel.

Still not sold on a battery pack back up, been caught a couple of times but can avoid this with a bit of pre-planning. One i was interested in said it was about 150 grams in weight but then a review said it was actually 750 grams - don't want the extra weight really.

Good idea about a Leatherman, saw some in Asia but couldn't quarantee quality/original but can see how useful they can be.

I think there is a lot to be said for quality/useful clothing, can make life a lot easier.

Have got to think about taking/saving copies of documents which i don't do much and get a job load of passport photos for visa applications - and thats just reminded me about an international driving license.

Not sold on the sink plug or door stop !!

Think i'm going to upgrade my phone so i can do away with a happy snappy camera i take with me sometimes. It does amaze me with the quality of photos one can take on a camera phone nowadays, perfect for travel blogs/facebook/emailing to friends, etc.

And if you're travelling for some time a bundle of dollars is always useful as they will be accepted pretty much anywhere.

The battery thing is remarkably useful if your flights happen not to coincide with a nice long charge beforehand. I have a 10000MaH Anker job, and it doesn't pull the suit down too much, and it is remarkable how much charge you can get into a a phone on flight mode in an hour and half. ( It's also remarkable how many edits this took after bottle of port).

Have given up carrying things to make up for cr4p hotels, and now just stay in nice ones.

I'm staying over at my brothers for a couple days and the plughole in their guest bedroom en-suite is water tight so you got to keep the hot tap running whilst shaving, I wish I had my emergency plug with me...

In other Festive news, Father Christmas bought me a 'Wallet Ninja', a credit card sized gizmo with a bottle opener and multiple screwdriver attachments etc. Cool looking, not sure how usable in reality it will be:

Well once we all felt a bit like Grandma with her shopping trolley pulling our cases around..

We have basic crash bags for our team when they're travelling that are very similar but will also include in addition - a satphone, compass, GPS, 50m paracord, firestrike kit (along with waterproof matches & a couple of bics), decent fixed blade knife, shemargh, spare batteries for everything, water filter straw, USB & hardcopies of all docs with translations, specific locations of Embassies/Consulates/Hospitals/Police & other secure safe zones, usually US$1,000 in variable denominations and then they'll personalise a bit.

That covers most eventualities.

Interesting...
I was tempted with the Water Filter Straw, firestrike & waterproof matches, but didnt want to turn it into a survival kit (My main focus is usually being able to get a hot snack or repair anything that Im carrying in the event of a breakage until I can get back to the UK).

Something else you missed out - a bunch of sheets of loo roll.

Always handy for the obvious and can be used for tinder if necessary. Also carry a bunch of ziplok bags to keep certain bits and bobs in as well.

I always have a couple of packets of tissues when I travel, a small tube of hand sanitizer can be handy too but I rarely carry one. Baby wipes are always a good shout too. None of these are really gadgets though.

My Travel can be anywhere in the world with as little as 24 hours notice or as long as it takes to get a visa fast tracked.
