Went to Croatia last year for a week. Close enough, lots to do, nice town and country.
Quite like idea of safari or Iceland or India or even Vietnam, but I hate flying. I used lorazepam which wax interesting.
So guess I could do it again...?

Suggestions.

You can go to the doctor and get zolpidem to knock you out rather than something to just calm your nerves.

It's a bit hit and miss with the dose though and be careful with alcohol. I landed at Heathrow from San Francisco, drove home, mumbled something to my family, went to bed and woke up the next day. I had no memory of leaving the plane or driving home and was quite shocked to wake up at home ... I take half a tablet now and was a little freaked at the time.

Ahem, that's what happened last time. Tested it out at home before taking one, two, three then four tablets over 3 hours before bed and felt nothing much. So went to bed. Woke up normal time.
So plan was to take 4 on the way out, which I did an hour before and I don't remember a thing once we landed in Croatia. Then arrived at hotel an slept for a day.
On the return home, had 5 left so didn't want to leave one in the packet. Took the rest 2 hours before and don't re,ember a thing from pula airport to gatwick. Slept in the car for about 6 hours....

I'm surprised you could walk after that much lorazepam. It is designed to just calm your nerves in small doses. A large dose will impair memory and all kinds of other fun things. So it may have worked if you just took one tablet.

A sleeping tablet isn't that bad, and good for long flights.

I remember feeling like I was wasted when walking.

Difficult to gauge how long it takes to affect you and how many to take...

Mrs PR went on a Virgin course @ Birmingham airport even went up on a small flight. Very impressed.

She came home absolutely buzzing and that evening booked a flight to Venice.

We had a couple more flights after that (all good) but unfortunately didn't keep it up, her confidence has now gone again. frown

The plane Virgin used was a normal passenger aircraft, not sure of the type but the sort of thing used for short haul European trips.

After a few successful flights we didn't travel by plane for a couple of yrs for unrelated reasons, driving or using the TGV. We then booked a flight but her confidence had just gone. If we had kept up flying a few times each year things may have been different, not sure really.

She is a rational and intelligent person. I think it's a lack of control that frightens her.

After a couple of aborted attempts, we have now taken the decision not to fly, a shame really because we do miss out on stuff. So we bought a dog smile got him a passport and we drive to avoid stress.

Don't let this put you off however, take the course.
I didn't expect too much so was impressed with it. Every type of person was there. An elderly lady who had never flown before, but wanted to attend her granddaughters wedding in America. Young guys, young women, middle aged an early twenties punky looking girl (who looked afraid of nothing!) every social, ethnic, economic and age group you could imagine.

The odd thing is, this has come on over time. When we 1st met she had traveled extensively by plane, and we had many stress free trips.

If you have a couple or more weeks...EURail Pass.

See Germany and Scandanavia. Eurostar to Brussels, take in Hamburg or Cologne, on to Copenhagen, Malmo and Stockholm. Maybe take an overnight Baltic ferry to Helsinki and spend a few days there. And return, stopping off in different cities to the outward trip.

Many other options with that pass of course....this is just a route I did a few years ago, one of the most relaxing ways of seeing a number of cities without all the hassle of airports.

That's been my solution lately too, but how do you handle business trips?
You know the kind where you have meetings as soon as you land, probably fly in the morning so airline wouldn't offer alcohol anyway, and/or you are with other colleagues and therefore can't be seen as raging alcoholic?

Solve the issue with flying, rather than looking for alternative holiday destinations, otherwise it will rule your travelling life.

What is your issue with flying?

Is it mechanical? Fear of crashing, etc?

Lack of control?

Claustrophobia?

Decide which it is and focus on treating that part.

Medication can help - it did for me but it requires willpower and, in simplistic terms, a bit of bravery aswell.

With the meds, you need to take enough to be chilled out. You certainly shouldn't be knocking yourself out because that's not a good thing....

The other key thing, I found, is practice. Fly as often as you can, but start small and build it up.
I started by flying to visit family in Scotland - 30 mins.
Then Europe - local, I think Amsterdam was the first one I did.
Then further afield, until I eventually went long-haul.

You can't obviously do all of this in a few months, but you can do the Scotland/Ireland local-ish flight, then book a holiday in Europe an hour or two away.

I flew all through my childhood until, for one reason or another, I didn't fly from aged 18 to about 25. Lost all confidence and really didn't want to do it.

Now, it's like getting on a bus - I fly several times a year.

Crashing and not in control , and some nutter jihadists or crazed Russians.
