I normally stay at Bellagio but was out there last April and stayed at Luxor as there was lot of us going and it was cheap. Wouldn't stay there again.

My sister was out there in November for the half marathon and stayed at Vdara. She thoroughly recommended it.
Good value for money with good sized and well equipped rooms. Just walk through Bellagio to get to the strip.

Going in March. Might get a Camaro or Corvette for a day to go exploring out of town, but didn't plan on getting one just to get around the place.

As for walking. I've never been before but the distances on the map give me a good idea of walking times. Whilst it's a fair old stroll around the place it doesn't look necessary to drive everywhere (unless of course you are going right from one end of the strip to the other or you are planning to stay in one place all night).

I'll have another look at the palazzo later, how does the Venetian compare to all this. As for Vdara, not too concerned that it doesn't have the casino - there isn't a shortage in the area wink
Be careful when hiring a car to go touring. Police are EVERYWHERE! We hired a Corvette Stingray for a couple of days and went to the Valley of Fire National park.

Roads were deserted but they have a ridiculous speed limit of 35mph! Unfortunatley the roads were not as deserted as I thought.

$200 and a wee trip to the county court and all was sorted. It didn't detract from the experience though, I found it quite funny much to my missus' disgust and I now have a speeding ticket earned in a 'Vette Stingray in the Valley of Fire. So that will be getting framed.

Recommend the Palazzo but do the upgrade to Prestige room. $100 extra per room per night but includes separate check in floor which saves queueing, lots of discounts on restaurants, free buffet breakfast, gym, phone calls, internet, separate lounge for free snacks and coffee all day which at night is open for free cocktails (except tips) for a couple of hour, makes SWMBO`s champagne bearable. Got it booked myself last 4 nights in April.

I stayed in Hotel 32 at the Monte Carlo on my most recent visit. Good location and much nicer rooms than the standard MC rooms.

Planet Hollywood is my favourite casino as it seems to be the only one with a high ceiling which makes it feel much less oppressive.

Wynn is nice but a bit far out of the way for my liking. Having a car is all well and good but the car parks are not often handy for the casino and traffic on the strip is pants.

Unlucky on the ticket! So in other words it's pointless taking a car out with 500hp?

Is this still the done thing as it'll be our first time soon ?

I wouldn't say it's pointless, just don't expect to go tearing round country roads like you would in the UK. The roads are typical US roads. Long, straight & monotonous. It's still great to get out in a typical yank sports car and live the American Dream.

If you want to drive some incredible cars in proper anger, and I mean PROPER anger, then head here www.dreamracing.com. I have been twice and it's simply the best thing I have ever done. First trip I drive the Aventador and F430GT race car. In November I drove the Huracan, GT3 and the F430GT Racecar again. It's expensive but it is without a doubt IMO the best thing to do in Vegas.

You didn't say what month you're planning to be there? -makes a big difference, as does whether you'll have a rental car.

I ALWAYS have a car in vegas, in the evenings taxi lines can be long, and I like the freedom.

My general answer to your question, is Wynn, end of.

More precisely, Bellagio is getting a bit old and tatty, Palazzo is a close second, Caesars is massively over priced and trading on its name. You could try Aria out, rooms are pretty nice, and location is decent. If you do plan on walking everywhere (and really why would you?!) Aria would be my pick. Not Vdara, doesnt even have a casino!

p.s. Tell your wife, classic vegas is downtown, not the Bellagio!
Taxi lines can be long but then the walk to your car will probably be longer. Thought that The Bellagio was looking pretty good back in September. To me at least, it appeared that there has been a bit of a spruce up, compared to my stay there 2 years previously.

The Wynn and Encore are about 10 mins walk from Bellagio. No big deal
Even Yusain Bolt would struggle to get between the 2 on foot in 10mins. More like 30mins.

For a first trip I'd vote for the Bellagio (with a strip view room, of course) as you'll be in the centre of the Strip and see all the bright lights from your room rather than a view from the Wynn of a vacant dirt lot where the Stardust used to be.
Like the Wynn, cracking hotel but the above is sound advice.

Seems to vary depending on who you ask.
I tried last time we were there in July 2014, but there was a massive conference going on during our first overnighter, then it was July 4th the second weekend we were there, so no upgrades. Elsewhere I got a few upgrades as ex-military so they are out there.
With regard to the police being "everywhere" I disagree. We did 3500 miles from Vegas, out round the Canyon, back to Vegas, up through Death Valley, Yosemite, across to San Francisco, then down the West coast to LA before returning to Vegas.
Saw one Police car outside the big cities. Anyway, driving fast through such epic scenery sort of misses the point....

For a first time trip I'd still consider the Cosmopolitan. As central as the Belllagio with even better views......

I know what you mean, but actually it doesn't depend on your age, "classic vegas" or "old vegas" does specifically refer to downtown.

Palazzo is the newer branch of the Venetian (as Encore is to the Wynn). Venetian is also looking pretty tired in the rooms. My cousin stayed there last year and changed room twice before realising that they're all grotty and grubby and giving up.

Cosmo rooms are great, if you've got a good rate there I'd take it, try to get a wraparound terrace suite, they're quite reasonably priced. As a casino and crowd its the party place though, so usually crowded with more than a few drunk people lurching around everywhere. Its worth googling spring break dates and seeing when you're going to be there, you can find the busiest weeks and see if it matches your dates. If it does, Cosmo will be carnage.

You have to valet!

The only casino where I don't valet are Bellagio, Wynn/Encore and Palazzo. At Venetian always lie, use the valet at the front and say you're checking in.

The wynn view rooms are there, there are certainly less of them though, you have to be at the right point on the curve! First trip though, Cosmo is a good shout view wise.

Thats actually pretty awesome! What did you have to do at the court? -I just used a service that changes the speeding fine into a parking ticket, so I never had to do that.

As a more 'outthere' suggestion, consider the Paris casino. I think its the Red room premier rooms that are actually quite nice and have decent views. Its opposite the Bellagio so good location too, and cheap.

Take a look at www.smartervegas.com and you can get really good room rates for every casino

I was leaving the next day so I opted to go to the county court and pay the fine to ensure that it was dealt with and that I had a copy of the receipt. Just incase it would cause me any issues when leaving the country. It was an experience in itself going to court. It was in a town somewhat akin to what I'd imagine an Amish town to look like. I got some very funny looks driving through it in a brand new Corvette! All part of the experience though and it's a great story to share.

Stayed at Mandalay Bay right at the other end of the Strip (it was £40 a night!), location isn't really a problem as long as you have a car. You may as well rent a car and check out the surrounding areas, you can get V8 Camaros, Mustangs, etc. pretty cheap.

You can go into any of the other hotels to eat, drink, gamble etc. and the self car parks were very convenient (seriously how lazy do you have to be to valet??)

Make sure you get the right room at MGM, the cheapest rooms have one window behind the bed, and thats your lot! There are so many room categories at MGM though that its hard to choose one way or another. It does have a nice buzz about it though, the only other thing is that its HUGE, so if you forget something in your room you'll be gone a while getting it.

Signature is across the road and joined onto MGM via moving walkways. Its 3 blocks of apartment hotels, so each room is owned individually and rented out by MGM group. In practise you cant really tell the difference between it and a hotel, though there's no casino. The benefit is that they are all effectively studio or one bedroom flats, so they have a little kitchen in them which can be handy. I stayed there for a month once and it was nice. If you want a decent room rate there you could go to www.vrbo.com and rent the unit directly from the owner for about 30% less then the room rate. Check the official rate first then email the owners if their rate is too similar.

I stayed at the Flamingo last time in one of the new GO rooms. I gave the check in person $20 and asked about upgrades and was given I room overlooking the Bellagio fountains. I wouldn't spend too much on the room as you probably won't be in it very long each day.

One thing about the Bellagio I found, as it's central and a land mark in itself the amount of non-guest footfall seemed to be higher than any of the other places I've stayed, this made getting into the restaurants etc on spec very difficult. I found the pool area to be a bit spring break-esque and IMO not particularly relaxing. The Wynn on the other hand I found the pool area really laid back if you fancied kicking back.

The standard fountain view room wasn't anything particularly special, but watching the fountains with the soundtrack playing on the TV was pretty awesome thumbup

The hotels are huge, even to walk from one hotel/casino to it's next door neighbour is usually a decent walk!

Slightly OT. I got pulled for speeding in 2010, was told the fine would come to my UK address but never materialised. I recently got a letter through from the county court saying that I owed 600 odd dollars. Nice. I'll worry about it if/when I ever plan to return.
