Grumpy that short haul passengers are subsidising these great deals - and if you have young kids long haul isn't an option. Grr

Long haul is ok with small kids: we took ours transatlantic twice a year from when they were born. You have to plan a bit more, and it is not as relaxing as not having kids, or having older kids, but it is perfectly doable. In fact both our girls worked out how to sleep through the night for the first time in N America, and not here (and they were dopey sleepers before working it out).

Agreed. Works fine with night-flights and use stopovers as part of the holiday if you need to. Took ours to Oz when they were 4 and 18 months. Nightflight to Singapore, 2 night stopover in Sing on way out with trip to the zoo; 1 night on way back. Kids slept nearly all the way.

Neither of our 2 sleep through the night.

Ie last night 18 times awake screaming crying (baby) and about 5 times 3yo. It would be Hell and also for other passengers too - imagine we went club sitting in pods next to you the crying and noise keeping you awake all night long even though you have spent thousands ?

If only I had found this sooner. I've already booked tickets to Bangkok and Costa Rica but just found them on that site for a massive difference. The Bangkok flight is £200 cheaper then I've paid (not sure if thats now due to lower fuel costs) and the Costa Rica one by £75.

Anyone fancy starting a dedicated thread for that site. Possible help each other find the alternate departure points for cheaper flights

Has anyone had refunds for the tax changes in air duty from BA? I booked up pre the change and have yet to receive any £ back.

Personally, I wouldn't mind (but I know others would). First, because it's public transport; secondly, because booze + over-ear noise cancelling headphones plus music are a pretty good counter-measure; thirdly, because these things can happen, and there's no point getting too worked up about it; and fourthly because I'd forewarn you (on here) that one of the secrets to managing small children on long flights is drugs.

Over the counter kids' medicines, that is. Something to - ahem - "help" them sleep. We used to let them run around a bit in the airport, get some food into them, let them watch a film, then drug 'em.

Harsh but fair. wink

Allowing for your normal exaggeration if there's nothing actually wrong with the kids then instead of a holiday Google "controlled crying" and take a couple of weeks off and sort your kids out.

We took our bonkers almost 3yr old granddaughter to the US and she was absolutely fine on the flights, although oddly didn't sleep a wink on the overnight flight back. In hindsight we made a mistake flying PE (on Virgin) as the armrest doesn't come up so she couldn't lie on her mum.

I'm not sure if (when we didn't have kids) that I'd mind too much.
Depended really - I recall one flight to the med poor baby was site rally screaming all the way not crying properly hysterical screaming and the parents sat not too far from us. It was a package holiday and a cheap one at that.

Had we paid £5k for the two of us and it was 10hours and let's say I'd consider that not to be an insignificant amount to spend on flights would I be hacked off if I'd booked it to get sleep certainly.

I just checked the Dublin costs for an upcoming trip to Florida this Xmas.

Flying 6 of us to MIA business class is circa £16K with Virgin Upper Class and around the same with BA.

The same flights are £10K cheaper if I go via Dublin. Since there is a change in airport on the return leg, I am hoping we can get the bags at LHR and quit there.

Can anyone see an issue with this plan. Is the connecting flight long enough?

I would leave a lot longer between the two legs of the outbound. You have a terminal change at LHR (I think), plus conformance time, plus you need a margin for a delay in landing. As you are switching airlines (BA to VS) AIUI VS won't cut you any slack if you miss their flight - it won't be their problem if BA delivers you late.

Hence why I tend to book the first (short haul) flight the day before the second (long haul) flight.

They might not go out of their way to rush him through (although I've recent experience of BA staff being rude & unhelpful on a tight transfer too) but as he's through ticketed they'd get him on another flight.

This was my worry, but I am not clear on how / where to book an option with a longer transfer time?

BA have implemented a stupid policy. Lots of airlines processing refunds immediately, but according to this article:

http://www.headforpoints.com/2015/01/14/how-to-cla...

Key paragraph

"If you booked directly with British Airways the APD charge will be refunded back to your original payment card as soon as you have flown the outbound sector from the UK."

As my ticket isn't flexible to cancel I'd lose the entire ticket cost - but as long as I get the cash back I'm happy. Frustrating to remember it to be honest!
What sort of refund will it be (4 club Europe 3 full paid seats and one under 2).

Check your receipt, BA are pretty good about showing the tax breakdown. I have £800 due from two child tickets to Boston in August flying economy so your refund should be significant.
