I couldn't imagine going away on a break or holiday for even one night without taking the little un with us. Grand parents would have her without question, but I would feel guilty. It's go as a family or not at all in my view, but I understand everyone is different. Was the same when I was growing up, my mum got a weekend away for 2 in a top hotel in Edinburgh with first class train travel as a reward from work when my sister and I were 7 and 8. My parents paid the difference so we could go. After the evening meal, we went up to the room and watched wrestling on Sky, which was a brilliant novelty to us, whilst the parents chilled out in the piano bar, ha ha!

I take it you didn't want kids then

I couldn't imagine leaving a baby at home while I went away on my jollies, let alone my wife.

it sounds like you're talking about dogs not kids

^^ This

At 4/5/6 then a week at grandparents is a fun adventure. At a few weeks old and 18 months respectively it's a selfish act from the parent.

Man up, OP... wink

We had kids as we wanted to share our life and love with children. Can't imagine why I'd want to go on holiday for one or two weeks without them..........now a dirty weekend on the other hand.

I can count on one hand the number of nights we've been apart from the little bds

Conversely they are now both teenagers and I have a long weekend in the Alps pencilled in for this year and a week in Vegas for next both in term time for me and the missus' special birthdays

My folks used to go off for a weeks holiday leaving me at home to water the stock, & look after the orchard when I was about 14.

I was responsible for feeding & cleaning out the fuel stove any way, so I could handle that, make a bowl of corn flakes, or cook a couple of chops or a bit of stake. I don't think I did anything else. It was like a holiday for me too, & I only missed school once.

Is have a 2 year old and a 1month old. I miss them if I don't seem them when I get home from work before bed. I cant comprehend why you would want to leave them for a week at that age.

Nothing illegal about leaving a 14 year old home alone for a week at all laugh

From Gov UK website

The law doesn’t say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

Operating a gas cooker can place them at risk , that sentence could fit any situation

I think leaving a 14 year old alone on what sounds like a farm could be classed as at risk by social services.

Depends on a lot of factors. You know that 13 year olds are allowed to drive tractors unaccompanied for example?

Maturity, etc is important. I doubt social services would blink an eyelid providing they weren't skipping school and they were fed, etc.

I'm used to it I guess. When the oldest was 5 weeks old I had to go away for 2 weeks, then when she was 3 months old I went away for 6 weeks.

I do think it would break my heart if the oldest was waking every morning wondering where we may have gone.

At the moment I'm looking forward to the day they're old enough to enjoy a holiday.

Hmmm leave a baby with the grandparents for a week??

No chance. The GPs would love it but not something I'd ever consider.

I do an annual boys ski trip with friends but tbh by Wednesday I'm really missing the little 'un and felt very emotional when I saw her on return.

Stupid post. The kids were needed. Who else is going to wipe my ass when I get old?! The dog could lick it I guess but I never know where his tongue has been. 😉

Different at 4/5/6/7 etc.

But aren't talking about "kids". We are talking about a few week old baby and a toddler that have a VERY high dependency on parents...

OP, how long before you tell us that you really don't have children, but you've just bought a Ferrari?

Good point but I don't think kids will be the same age at the end of the year.

I think a lot depends on the grandparents too. My parents are level headed and very sensible with the kids. My in-laws are not so sensible but they're a riot and my oldest always goes mad for them. They have infinitely more energy than we do. Both sets have suggested staying at our house so the kids can carry on with their routines (play groups etc). I think both GPs are secretly dying for us to go on holiday so they can have the kids.

This thread has made me re-think. I do think when they get slightly older I will never holiday without them but at such a young age I see it pointless taking them.
